Tech Tip #3 - there are 3 more days to get a free upgrade to Windows 10. Should you do it? Some people are thrilled, others, not so much.

My opinion is that you should. It actually combines the best features from Win 8 (mostly the speed, not too much else here) and Win 7 which was solid and stable.

If your computer is more than 6 years old, don't bother, you will be getting a new one soon. Otherwise, give it a shot with the following to keep in mind:

1. The installation for download through install can take a few hours. Make sure your laptop has power and if possible, the sleep mode turned off.

2. If, upon completion and testing you do not like Windows 10, you can revert to your previous operating system quickly and easily for 30 days. To do this you would select Start, Settings, Update and Security, Restore. In this restore section there will be a button to revert back, however, this button disappears after 30 days.

I hope this helps in your decision!

Tech tip #2 - "My computer runs so slow?" I hear this every day. So what do I do first? I restart their computer. All of a sudden it is fast again (relatively speaking).

The reason is simple if you understand this one thing - Windows has a leak. That made me laugh the first time I thought of it this way - leaky Windows, sounds like my house.

Here's what that means. When you first start your computer certain programs are started that are needed to run or they are requested at startup. This takes up a percentage of the resources the Windows environment has in total. Generally this is about 10% so 90% would be available to run your computer which is fine. Each time you load a new program like Outlook and Internet Explorer more resources are utilized, let's say 5% so now we are at 85% available. Now here is the problem - If you closed both of those programs you would think that the resources would be 90% again but instead it something closer to 88%.

What happened to that 2%? Basically, they leaked out. So play this out further. You go in and out of programs all day. You leave your computer on and do the same thing the next day and so on until your computer has less than 50% of the resources available. Now it can no longer process your requests quickly and so yes, it is now running slow.

The fix? Restart your computer and you are back up to 90%.

I restart my computer at least three times a week.

There may be other issues as to why your computer is running slow but you have to start here.

Hope this helps!

Tip #1 - Check to see if your Internet speeds at work and at home are what you are paying for.

Here's how to check your speed - http://speedtest.xfinity.com/

When you get your result call your service provider and ask them what it should be. The download speed is most important and I recommend a speed of at least 25 Mbps.

My latest results have download a speed of 178 Mbps which is very fast however, one week ago my speed was 90. When I called them (Comcast for me) they said the speed should be 150 so I thought hmmmmm what is going on here. Then I realized I had a Cisco Small Business router attached to my Comcast cable modem. Knowing that Comcast has newer cable modem/router with wireless now I could eliminate the Cisco router. By doing this the speed shot up to almost double and the wireless signal was excellent.

Since we are dependent on the Internet, this little exercise may help you become more productive or at least get faster video streaming!

Stay tuned for more tech tips and let me know if you need assistance removing and existing router or wireless access point.

Cheers!
