Courtesy of Multilingual Media, Weekly Digest:

If you followed the civil unrest in Ukraine back in 2014 (and probably even if you didn’t), you likely remember seeing the country’s capital city spelled as “Kiev.”

You’d be hard-pressed to find that spelling in most English-language coverage of the recent invasion of the country. Now, most outlets (including MultiLingual) use the spelling “Kyiv,” which is a Latin-alphabet transliteration of the city’s name in the Ukrainian language — “Київ.”

While it’s just two letters different from the Russian-derived spelling that English speakers have used for decades, the distinction between “Kyiv” and “Kiev” is reflective of Ukraine’s national identity as a nation that speaks, well, Ukrainian. Still, it’s just another example of how difficult — and politically consequential — it can be to translate place names from the native language to another, non-local language.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The American Translators Association (ATA), the nation’s largest professional organization for translators and interpreters, announced the election of Bridget Hylak as administrator of the association’s Language Technology Division.

Hylak has directed Come Alive Communications, Inc., a boutique translation firm, since 1990. She also serves as senior consultant with TongueTek Language Consulting and is an international speaker on cultural and language-related issues.

Hylak is a seasoned language industry veteran whose career has run the gamut from bilingual dictionaries to comprehensive language productivity tools. Her current efforts focus on consulting services on behalf of language industry technologies and the coordination of widescale international campaigns for the corporate, government, and private sectors. She continues to spearhead and/or direct a regular stream of projects involving lively, “impeccably felt” literary translation and production for the film and music industries.

An ATA-certified Spanish into English translator, Hylak is also certified as a Spanish into English court interpreter by the National Center for State Courts and the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts. She is a master editor (English, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese) and an approved oral exam candidate for the Federal Court Interpreting Certification Examination. She serves on the Pennsylvania Judicial Courts Language Monitoring and Access Team and volunteers as Multilingual Outreach Coordinator for LymeBasics.com, formerly the Pennsylvania Lyme Disease Association.

Hylak graduated with distinction from Stanford University, where she studied Communications, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Founded in 1959, the American Translators Association’s primary goals include fostering and supporting the professional development of translators and interpreters and promoting the translation and interpreting professions. ATA, based in Alexandria, Virginia, has nearly 10,000 members in over 100 countries. For more information on ATA, please visit www.atanet.org.
