♻️💻 Getting Rid of an Old Computer? Don’t Forget About Your Data!

That old laptop sitting in the closet may not be worth much anymore — but the information stored on it could be.

Before you recycle, donate, sell, or give away a computer, simply deleting your files or emptying the Recycle Bin isn’t enough.

Your old computer may still contain:

📧 Saved emails and account information
📸 Personal photos and documents
💳 Tax and financial records
🔑 Saved passwords and browser data
☁️ Access to OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox
🏢 Business or customer information

🔒 Before the computer leaves your possession, make sure your personal information leaves it too.

Depending on what you're doing with the computer, that may mean securely wiping the drive and reinstalling Windows — or physically destroying the storage drive if the computer is being recycled and the drive won't be reused.

And don't forget about old hard drives and SSDs you've removed from previous computers. They can contain just as much sensitive information.

Not sure whether an old computer is safe to donate, sell or recycle?

Wilmot Computer Solutions can help make sure your data is properly removed before you let it go.

🔐💻 Do You Know Who Has Remote Access to Your Computer?

Remote support is incredibly convenient. It allows an IT professional to help you without making a trip to your home or office.

But here's a question worth asking:

Do you know what remote-access software is installed on your computer — and who can use it?

Over time, computers can accumulate remote-support programs from:

🔹 Previous IT companies
🔹 One-time technical support sessions
🔹 Employers
🔹 Software vendors
🔹 Friends or family who helped with a problem

And unfortunately, scammers frequently try to convince people to install remote-access software too.

Take a few minutes to review what's installed on your computer. If you see programs such as remote desktop or support tools that you don't recognize, don't immediately delete them — but find out what they are and who installed them.

⚠️ Most importantly: Never give someone remote access to your computer because of an unsolicited phone call, email, text message, or pop-up warning.

Legitimate companies like Microsoft aren't going to unexpectedly call you because they “detected a virus on your computer.”

Not sure what's installed or whether something belongs there? That's exactly the kind of thing Wilmot Computer Solutions can help you review.

🔐 Guest Wi-Fi Isn’t Just for Guests — It Can Help Protect Your Network

Whether you’re running a business 🏢 or protecting your home network 🏠, not every device needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Computers, phones, security cameras, smart TVs, thermostats, streaming boxes, smart plugs, doorbells and other devices can often communicate with other devices on the same network.

⚠️ Why does that matter?

A guest could connect an infected laptop to your Wi-Fi. 💻🦠 Or a smart camera, TV, plug, or other Internet of Things (IoT) device could have an unpatched security vulnerability.

If that device is on the same network as your computers and other important devices, a compromised device could potentially provide an attacker with a path to other systems.

🛡️ The solution is network segmentation — separating devices that don't need to communicate with each other.

🏢 For Businesses

👥 Guests & Personal Devices
Put customers, visitors, and employees’ personal devices on a separate Guest Wi-Fi network.

📹 Smart & IoT Devices
Cameras, TVs, thermostats, smart plugs, streaming devices, and other IoT equipment should ideally be placed on a separate IoT network or VLAN.

💼 Business Computers & Servers
Keep computers, servers, printers, and other important business systems on your trusted business network, separated from guests and IoT devices.

🏠 What About at Home?

Network segmentation is useful for residential networks too!

If your home router doesn't have a dedicated IoT network, your Guest Wi-Fi can often be a great place for smart devices such as:

📺 Smart TVs & streaming devices
📹 Security cameras & video doorbells
🌡️ Smart thermostats
💡 Smart bulbs & smart plugs
🔊 Smart speakers
🤖 Other Internet-connected gadgets

This can help keep less-trusted IoT devices separated from your personal computers, phones, NAS, and other important devices. 🔒

⚠️ One thing to keep in mind: Some smart-home devices need to communicate with your phone or another device on your main network. Moving them to Guest Wi-Fi can sometimes affect discovery, casting, AirPlay, or local control. Your network may need to be configured accordingly.

💡 Guest Wi-Fi isn't just a convenience for visitors — it can be an important part of your network security.

Not sure how your home or business network is configured? 🤔

👉 Are guests separated from your trusted devices?
👉 Where are your cameras and smart devices connected?
👉 Can your IoT devices communicate with computers they don't need access to?

A little network separation can go a long way toward improving security. 🔐🛡️

💻 Do You Really Need to Replace Your Computer?

Is your computer running slow, taking forever to start, or just not working as well as it used to?

Before spending hundreds—or even thousands—on a new computer, it may be worth finding out whether the one you already have can be improved.

Sometimes a tune-up, memory upgrade, SSD upgrade, cleanup, or a few other changes can give an older computer plenty of useful life. Other times, replacement really is the better investment.

I put together a new article explaining some of the things to consider before making that decision:

Not sure whether your computer is worth upgrading? Wilmot Computer Solutions can help you figure out your options before you spend money on a replacement.

🔐 What Happens to Your Digital Life When You're Gone?

Most of us have a plan for our home, finances, and other important belongings — but what about our digital life?

Think about everything you have online:

📧 Email accounts
☁️ Photos and cloud storage
💳 Online financial accounts
📱 Phones, computers and tablets
🔑 Password managers and login credentials
🌐 Social media accounts
💻 Online subscriptions and services

Would your family know what accounts you have, where your important files and photos are stored, or how to access the information they need?

A **Digital Legacy Plan** can help make sure they do.

I recently put together a guide explaining what a Digital Legacy Plan is, what information you should consider documenting, and how to do it **without creating a security risk by simply writing down all of your passwords.**

👉 Read the full article here:
https://wilmotcs.com/digital-legacy-plan/

It's one of those things that's easy to put off — but your family may someday be very glad you took the time to do it.

🔐 Are Password Managers Really Worth It?

If you're still using the same password for multiple websites—or trying to remember dozens of different passwords—you're putting yourself at unnecessary risk.

In my latest blog post, I explain:
✅ Why password managers are one of the best security investments you can make
✅ Common myths that keep people from using them
✅ Why I personally recommend Bitwarden
✅ Simple tips to better protect your online accounts

As security expert and host of the long-running Security Now! podcast, Steve Gibson has emphasized for years:

"Passwords should be long, strong, unique, and managed by software—not by memory."

If you'd like to improve your online security without making life more complicated, this article is a great place to start.

🚨 Don't Fall for Email Phishing Scams! 🚨

Cybercriminals are getting better at creating fake emails that look like they're from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, your bank, or even someone you know.

Before clicking any link, ask yourself:

✅ Was I expecting this email?
✅ Does the sender's address look legitimate?
✅ Is the email creating urgency or fear?
✅ Have I hovered over the link to see where it actually goes?

One accidental click can lead to stolen passwords, financial fraud, or malware infections.

Want to test your skills? Google offers a FREE phishing awareness quiz:

It's quick, educational, and could help you avoid becoming the next victim.
