A viral optical illusion featuring a Coca-Cola can has been surprising people because there’s actually no red in the image at all. Instead, the design is made up of white, blue and black tones.
When arranged in a specific way, these colours trick the brain into filling in the missing red, making the iconic Coke branding appear fully coloured even though it isn’t.
This works thanks to something called colour constancy, where the brain interprets familiar objects based on expectation rather than what’s actually there. Because we strongly associate Coca-Cola with its signature red, our minds automatically “correct” the image. It’s a simple but fascinating example of how easily our visual perception can be influenced.
