These phishing scams often pretend to be from real companies or authorities to seem more believable and trustworthy. SMS one-time passwords can be hacked through techniques like SIM swapping, social engineering attacks on telecom providers, or malware compromising the mobile device. Hackers can intercept and use the OTP codes, bypassing the two-factor authentication. SMS OTP is considered less secure than other 2FA methods like authenticator apps or physical security keys.

If your account supports Authenticator Apps (like Google or Microsoft), Passkeys (not passwords!), or physical security keys (Yubikey), then use these methods for two factor authentication instead.

This means that even if your password is compromised, the second test should prevent unauthorized access to an account. The second factor may come in the form of a text message with a “one-time password”, a code sent to an authenticator app, or a physical security key.
