Audio people raise your hand if you know the answer to this question:

What is the difference between mono and stereo?

The difference is in the number of channels used. Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one.

In monaural (mono) sound, one single channel is used. It can be reproduced through several speakers, but all speakers are still reproducing the same copy of the signal.

In stereophonic (stereo) sound, more channels are used. You can use two different channels and make one feed one speaker and the second channel feed a second speaker. This is used to create directionality, perspective, space.

Who remembers Betamax and the videotape "Format War"?

The first consumer-grade VCR to be released was from Philips in 1972, followed in 1975 by Sony's Betamax. This was quickly followed by the competing VHS format from JVC. Subsequently, the Betamax–VHS format war began.

Betamax had the upper hand when it came to overall video quality; however, that proved to matter less to the consumer. Most people opted for VHS in favor of its lower cost and longer recording time.

By 1981, sales of Betamax machines around the world had sunk to a fraction of VHS. The last Betamax unit was produced in 2002 while VHS managed to survive until 2008.
