New research finds small business owners spend roughly twice as much time on administration as they do on growing the business.

Read that ratio again. Two hours of paperwork for every hour spent on the thing the business actually exists to do.

The study frames AI as the opportunity to close that gap, which is probably right, but the prerequisite is more boring than the headline. You can't automate a process you haven't defined. Most admin burden isn't a technology problem. It's an undocumented-process problem wearing a technology costume.

New research reveals small business owners spend twice as much time on administration as growing their businesses, highlighting productivity challenges.

The state privacy patchwork keeps widening. New comprehensive laws took effect this year in Indiana, Kentucky and Rhode Island, with amendments in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Utah.

Rhode Island's is worth noting: no cure period. No window to fix a violation before penalties attach.

For most businesses, this stops being a legal question fast and becomes a records question. You can't honor a deletion request for data you can't locate, and you can't prove retention compliance from a filing cabinet.

IAPP News Editor Joe Duball rounds up the new U.S. state privacy laws and rules that came into force 1 Jan. and the potential impacts they will bring.

Federal cybersecurity guidance built specifically for organizations without a security team. Free, no login, nothing to buy.

CISA's framing is blunt: incidents have surged among small businesses that don't have the resources to defend against something like ransomware, and the advice has to evolve with the threat.

If you've been meaning to get organized on this and haven't known where to start, start here. Then the harder work is inventory - knowing every device on your network and who's accountable for keeping each one current.

58% of small businesses now use generative AI. Three years ago it was 23%.

What makes this piece worth reading isn't the adoption curve, though. It's the caution buried in it. Adding tools without clear rules creates new risk, and automation is supposed to make operations easier to understand, not harder to manage.

That's the part most people skip. The businesses getting real value from automation aren't the ones with the most tools. They're the ones who decided what the process should look like before they went shopping.

Discover how small business automation is reshaping enterprises, boosting efficiency, and prompting new tech upgrades for digital growth.

Federal paperwork cost American small businesses more than $81 billion in 2025. Over 80% of that burden traces to a single agency.

That's from the SBA's Office of Advocacy. Government data, not a vendor's whitepaper.

The number is worth holding next to a simpler question: how much of your team's week goes to handling, filing, retrieving and re-filing documents that nobody outside the building will ever read? That cost doesn't show up on any invoice, which is exactly why it never gets examined.

Two numbers from CNBC's reporting on this year's breach data:
1,803 reported data compromises in the first half of 2026, up from 1,732 in the same stretch last year. And per IBM, one in four breaches is now AI-enabled. A 56% jump year over year.

The attackers got faster. Most organizations' patching cadence didn't.

If you're taking one thing from this, make it an inventory question: do you actually know every networked device sitting inside your perimeter, and who's responsible for updating each one?

Data breaches are surging in 2026, with artificial intelligence playing a growing role in cyberattacks, and 'malicious insider' incidents also on the rise.

The hardest part of adopting new technology is rarely the technology itself. It’s the workflow around it.

How does information enter the system?
Who needs to review it?
What happens next?
Where does it get stored?
Who needs visibility?

When those pieces are unclear, even the best tools can fall short. But when the workflow is designed well, technology can do what it’s supposed to do: make work easier, faster, and more reliable.

A program that started with the team, not the tool, shifted the outcome.

AI can only support better decisions when the business understands how those decisions are actually made. That means documenting the logic, judgment calls, exceptions, approvals, and context that guide the work.

For many businesses, the most important step before adding more technology is getting clearer about the process behind the outcome. Because when the workflow is unclear, the tool has nothing solid to support. Better systems start with better visibility.

As AI agents take on more complex work, the key constraint is no longer access to technology but an organization’s ability to make its decision-making processes explicit. Many critical judgments—about risk, exceptions, quality, escalation, customer treatment, and tradeoffs—have traditionally e...

AI is not just a faster way to do old work. The bigger opportunity is using it to rethink the workflow itself.

Where are teams stuck in outdated handoffs?
Where are people duplicating effort?
Where does information sit too long before someone can act on it?

Technology creates more value when it helps a business move work forward more clearly, consistently, and intelligently. That starts by looking at the process, not just the tool.

Organizations often assume their biggest constraint is a lack of new capabilities. More often, it’s the accumulation of outdated ones. Legacy workflows, entrenched assumptions, and inherited metrics quietly shape decisions long after they’ve ceased to reflect current market realities—especiall...

Technology cannot fix a process no one understands. Before a business adds AI, automation, or another platform, it helps to step back and ask:

What is the process supposed to accomplish?
Where does it break down?
Who owns each step?
What information needs to move?
What should happen automatically, and what still needs human judgment?

The right solution starts with clarity. When the workflow is defined, technology has something useful to support.

AI can support decision making, but it does not account for the nuance behind decisions. Those remain leadership responsibilities.
