It makes you realize how much we have come to depend on the internet. -- The significant increase in access as a result of the coronavirus situation has slowed things down. Kids are at home learning online and playing games, people are working from home. We're downloading movies, Facetiming friends, ordering online -- you name it. What would we do without the internet? That would be social distancing of another type!

The virus is really stress testing the internet across the country.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot? -- December is actually a good time for networking as you're often reconnecting with old friends, family, and associates. Discussions often naturally lead to talking about what they've been up to and about their future hopes and plans. And you'll meet new people outside your usual network at parties, dinners, and other social events. If you listen with genuine interest you may find complementary interests and opportunities to help out. But you shouldn't turn these holiday encounters into opportunities to "sell" yourself of push your own agenda. This article has some good tips.

Should you hire a pro to design your business website? Or do it yourself?

I'll admit it. As a web professional, I'm biased. I have to admit that it's easier than ever to create your own website. However, if you want results, then you should consider having it done by someone who is experienced and well-versed in what it takes to create an effective website.

I see too many small business websites that were launched before they were ready for show-time! The do-it-yourselfer often starts without a plan. They usually get stuck somewhere along the way. Or they get distracted by other pressing matters and give up. But sometimes they launch the site anyhow figuring that they'll fix the errors and add more content later. They figure that it's "better than nothing!"

The result of the DIY website can be NO results, lost opportunities, wasted time, and making a bad impression with potential customers.

Recently completed a website makeover for Jennifer's Cafe on Haggerty Road in Walled Lake (Commerce) at http://jenniferscafe.net. This popular family-owned restaurant wanted mostly to feature their menu offerings. -- Straightforward and without any frills. So we kept it simple as can be. No social media or online ordering necessary. This WordPress website gets a decent amount of web traffic for a small, local business.

It's always a pleasure to work with Eddie and Cindi at Jennifer's Cafe -- just as it's always a pleasure to dine there!
