A browser pop-up claiming your computer is infected can look convincing—especially when it tells you to call “support” right away. Don’t call the number, install software, or give a stranger remote access to your device. Close the tab or browser; if it won’t close, use your device’s task manager or force-quit option. If you’re concerned, open your trusted security software directly instead of following the pop-up.

Before you scan, take a second to check whether the code seems tampered with or out of place. When in doubt, type in the website yourself instead of letting a mystery square decide.
