Before you connect to the free WiFi at your local coffee shop, in the airport, or at a hotel, you should think twice about the dangers of public unsecured networks. Hackers can position themselves between your device and the connection point, gaining access to every piece of information you enter, including passwords, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc. Try using a hot-spot provided by your cell carrier instead, and turn off WiFi and Bluetooth on your devices when you’re not using them.

Keep your private information safe by shopping only on secure websites. The URL should start with “https” instead of just “http,” the S stands for secure. If you see an icon shaped like a closed padlock in the browser address bar this means any data you enter on the website is encrypted, reducing the risk that your information will be compromised.
