My youngest son turned 12 this year and just started training for service rifle competition! Starting him out with iron sights. My local club requires anyone who wants to shoot from position (i.e. not rested on the bench) to qualify. The kid has to qualify with irons and then he can switch to a scope.

So far he's putting them all on paper offhand, sitting, and prone, and getting better with each shot. I built him a nice light carbine to get started with until he's old enough to wield a proper 20" heavy service rifle.
