17-year-old Grade 10 learner shot & killed after leaving school while classes were still in session.

The atmosphere in Mfuleni, Cape Town, has been heavy with grief and shock following the tragic shooting of a young student from Mfuleni Technical Academy. The incident occurred on a quiet Wednesday afternoon, leaving the community devastated. Eyewitnesses recount that the 17-year-old boy was simply walking home from school when gunfire erupted along a nearby residential street. The shots shattered the calm of the neighborhood, and moments later, the boy was seen collapsing to the ground. Concerned residents quickly rushed to provide assistance and contacted emergency services. Despite swift efforts by paramedics, it was confirmed that the young learner had succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds right at the scene.

In respecting the privacy of the family, authorities have decided not to release the victim’s identity until next of kin have been notified. This tragic loss has sent ripples of sorrow through the community, prompting a collective sense of mourning. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a murder investigation and is calling on the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, adding to the community’s anguish and confusion.

Local residents express deep concern over the rising violence affecting their neighborhood. One community member described the young boy as a respectful and focused studentβ€”someone who had his whole life ahead of him. The incident has underscored the urgent need for increased safety measures, especially for children walking home from school. In response, the school has extended heartfelt condolences to the family and arranged counseling services to support students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Community leaders and organizations have come together to demand stronger policing and preventative measures to curb youth violence. They emphasize that safety should never be compromised, especially in familiar and supposedly secure environments. As the community mourns, residents are lighting candles, holding vigils, and calling for justice, hoping that their collective voice will lead to meaningful change. Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward anonymously, in the hope of bringing closure and ensuring such a tragedy does not happen again.Tech Prov

Police have announced a R300 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of suspects in the murders of three police officers in two separate shootings within 24 hours.

On Friday, 8 August 2025, gunmen ambushed and killed two detectives from the Johannesburg Trio Task Team while they transported awaiting trial prisoner Jabulani Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court back to prison.

The suspects disarmed Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa, 51, and Sergeant Simon Masenye, 45, before shooting them.

Moyo was last seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which police later found several kilometres from the crime scene.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff with a special award to pass on to a senior CIA official whose son was killed while fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war. During Witkoff's visit to Russia, Putin gave the Order of Lenin to Trump's special envoy, sources familiar with the matter told BBC's US partner CBS. Michael Gloss, 21-year-old son of a CIA official, Juliane Gallina, who is currently the CIA's deputy director for digital innovation, was killed in Ukraine last year. This comes after it was confirmed that US President Donald Trump will be meeting Putin in Alaska next week to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war and ceasefire. However, Russia has not announced it publicly. The Order of Lenin is a Soviet-era award, recognising outstanding civilian service. Gloss's family will be receiving the award, as per the BBC report. The death of Michael Gloss The reports of Gloss's death first emerged earlier in April; however, only Russian media broke the news. Later that month, the CIA released a statement, saying that Gloss had been suffering from mental health problems, adding that his death was not a national security issue. A person familiar with the matter told CBS that Gloss was never an employee of the CIA. Moreover, the Kremlin did not initially appear to be aware of the family background of Gloss, who enlisted with Russian forces in autumn 2023. Last year, Gloss shared posts, expressing support for Russia, calling it the "Ukraine Proxy war". He shared selfies in Moscow's Red Square and dismissed media coverage of the conflict as "western propaganda". The CIA, in its statement, wrote that Gallina and her family had suffered an "unimaginable personal tragedy". Larry Gloss, Gloss's father, who is an Iraq war veteran, told the Washington Post that their son had struggled for most of his life with mental illness. "Our biggest fear while we were waiting for him to be repatriated was that someone over there [in Moscow] would put two and two together and figure out who his mother was, and use him as a prop," Gloss's family said.Tech Provider

JVC's Innovative Color CRT: Combining Monochrome CRT and LCD Shutter Technology.

In a standard color CRT monitor, three electron beams each excite phosphors for the three primary additive colors: red, green, and blue. In black and white CRTs, there's just a single electron beam, which makes for a much simpler device.Tech Prov

Maglev trains' tunnel boom problem may finally have a fix.

The Guardian reports that researchers have developed a new method to reduce the "tunnel boom" effect that occurs when high-speed trains exit tunnels. The technology could soon prove essential, as next-generation maglev trains approach speeds exceeding 600 mph.Tech Tech Provider
