The legislators — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore. — cited the proliferation of the technology, particularly Flock’s ALPRs, across the country and widespread abuses of the technology by some law enforcement officers as reasons for writing the bill.

Along with putting a halt to federal funding for state and local agencies that use the tech, the legislation would also prevent all federal agencies from using ALPRs and allow Americans to sue the federal government for violation of their rights through the use of them. https://scoopmedia.co/4yQdvXs

A Massachusetts man was sentenced to two years in federal prison this week for his role in a multi-state conspiracy that used stolen identities to obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Raul Fernandez Vicioso, 38, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty in March to charges including SNAP fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. A federal judge sentenced him Monday to two years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to the Justice Department. Vicioso was also ordered to pay $1.1 million in restitution and an additional $1.1 million in forfeiture. https://scoopmedia.co/4ihdVA1

California has reopened its State Operations Center, a central command and control facility for emergencies and natural disasters, ahead of what forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said could be a record-breaking El Niño event this winter season, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced Tuesday.

The State Operations Center, staffed by the California Office of Emergency Services and partners from across state government, has been modernized to “coordinate faster, smarter responses to disasters” by expanding the center’s physical footprint and upgrading the State Warning Center — the state’s 24/7 intelligence hub for monitoring threats. The state also replaced the operations center’s aging technology wall — essentially a large display screen or video wall used by emergency managers and state officials to maintain a shared, real-time visual layout during disasters. https://scoopmedia.co/4igULdB

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers announced its 2026-2027 executive leadership team Tuesday, promoting Utah CIO Alan Fuller to serve as the organization’s president for the term from his previous role as vice president.

Fuller replaces Arizona CIO J.R. Sloan, who has served as NASCIO’s president over the past year. Sloan used his time in leadership to spearhead an initiative on citizen identity management. In a report about the presidential initiative, NASCIO noted that it “has become a critical dependency for citizen-facing digital services offering no-wrong-door service delivery and reducing fraud” – but many states still face challenges in implementing solutions, such as funding, lack of collaboration, and resistance across state organizations. https://scoopmedia.co/4zugvbO

As Minnesota state officials brace for a disallowance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the coming weeks, according to sources from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, they’re calling for more transparency from the Trump administration into the tech and data used to make those decisions.

CMS has threatened to withhold $2 billion in Medicaid funding annually and has already frozen $550 million in deferrals over the past several quarters, including an initial $259 million when the Trump administration announced the crackdown in February 2026. https://scoopmedia.co/4znUyLl

Terminating the federal E-Rate broadband subsidy program for schools and libraries would cost the U.S. economy over $4 billion annually, according to a new study published by the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband (SHLB) Coalition.

The economic study, released by SHLB and other partner associations on Thursday, found that removing E-Rate’s $2.6 billion in annual support would reduce the U.S. real GDP by $4.2 billion. This translates to about $1.60 in lost economic activity for every $1 of support removed from the program that helps schools and libraries pay for internet connectivity and related services, the study found. https://scoopmedia.co/4dAuC6T
