🚨 Two Former U.S. Air Force Members Sentenced in International Cyber Fraud Scheme
Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu and Harafat Mogaji, who were members of the U.S. Air Force at the time of the offenses, have been sentenced to a combined 189 months in federal prison for their roles in an international cyber intrusion and fraud scheme.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the pair used phishing and email-spamming campaigns to obtain employee login credentials. They then used stolen credentials and spoofed email addresses to impersonate businesses and redirect legitimate payments to accounts controlled by their network.
More than $1.68 million was diverted from a victim in Iowa, while another $720,000+ was diverted from a victim in Ohio.
Odimegwu received 111 months in prison and was ordered to pay approximately $366,618 in restitution. Mogaji received 78 months and was ordered to pay approximately $995,680.
The case was investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. (Department of Justice)
This case is another reminder that phishing, compromised email accounts and payment-redirection fraud can cause enormous financial losses. Businesses and individuals should take cybersecurity seriously and verify payment instructions through trusted channels.
