Ever get an email saying your device's "support plan has expired" and you need to renew right now to stay protected?

It's a scam email that piggybacks on a very real habit — keeping devices maintained and up to date. The message usually creates urgency, includes a "renew now" link, and asks for payment or remote access to your computer. Real device warranties and support agreements don't work that way. They don't expire without notice, and legitimate providers never pressure you into an on-the-spot payment through email.

If you get one of these, don't click. Contact your IT provider directly using a number or email you already have on file, not the one in the message.

These callers (or sometimes pop-ups with a phone number to call) claim your device is at risk and needs immediate remote access to install an update. Once they're in, they can install malware, steal information, or lock you out of your own system.

Real update alerts never come from a phone call, and no legitimate company will ask for remote access to "fix" a routine update. If your devices are actually behind on updates, that's something your IT provider handles quietly in the background — not something you'll be cold-called about.
