It seems Microsoft inadvertently made protected kernel memory readable by common users in windows 7. This happened in the patch to fix the meltdown bug. So, while trying to increase security, they actually lowered it.

Anyone running Windows 7 needs to get the new patch installed asap, and it is recommended to change passwords after applying.

Security researcher Ulf Frisk announced that Microsoft's patch for Meltdown on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 caused an even bigger security issue by allowing any user-level process on a system to read and write memory contents.
