A weak fractional CMO talks about activities.
A strong one talks about pipeline, velocity, and profitable revenue.
Here's how to tell the difference before you sign:
A weak candidate leads with deliverables, impressions, and "brand awareness" : without ever connecting the work to revenue.
A strong candidate can explain:
→ The business outcome they personally own
→ How they'll diagnose your growth problem
→ Which systems they'll improve : and why
→ How results will be measured
→ What should be true by day 90
Ask for a sample executive report. Does it show where qualified pipeline came from, what's converting, and what leadership should decide next : or does it bury you in channel activity?
Ask for references who'll be candid about the difficult parts of the engagement.
And make sure the 90-day plan is reversible: a defined review point where you decide to continue, change scope, or walk away.
The biggest mistake CEOs make is hiring for activity instead of ownership.
More Revenue. Less Work.
