One Nine Design

One Nine Design Website design services, templates, and courses for nonprofits and small businesses. Hi, I’m Andrea. In fact, most of those years were really hard. Asking. single.
(6)

I’m a big-city girl, living in a small town, helping nonprofits and small businesses stop worrying about the technology and start using the digital marketing tools they need to grow their impact and reach. That looks like designing websites, email campaigns, and marketing strategies as part of the SM+Co team and designing easy-to-use tools in the Nonprofit Template Shop! My career started in fundr

aising before I really knew what fundraising was. In charge of 50+ students, I was hired to be the Assistant Director of Annual Giving at the West Virginia University Foundation (Let’s Go! Mountaineers!) and run the student telemarketing program known as The Mountaineer Line. That job would put me on a winding path of nonprofit work for the next 15 years, holding every position from volunteer, to fundraiser, to Executive Director and everything in between. Throughout it all, one thing has been consistent: I understand the value of making a great first impression. In September 2019, I was named the 2019 Mid-Ohio Valley Entrepreneur of the Year. That kind of recognition doesn’t come easy — it’s a result of hard work, of putting my experience to work for people like you, and for making it a priority to be generous in giving to both my community and other female entrepreneurs. I can’t remember any of the work I’ve accomplished being easy. The late nights. The travel to see donors and volunteers. The letter stuffing. Preparing for board meetings. Executing events. And asking! The mail merges and the balancing of every. hat. You get it, right? Nonprofit work is crazy rewarding but gosh is it hard. After leading my local United Way team to record-breaking fundraising results and crazy growth for nearly three years, I came to a crossroads. I was unhealthy, physically and mentally. I was neglecting myself in every way, pouring every bit of myself into the organization and leaving at the end of long days with nothing left to give my family waiting at home. Personal challenges were mounting. Something had to give. At the end of 2016, I left a really great thing in search of something better. In search of finding myself again and getting my priorities back in order. For several months, I quietly put myself back together. I started showing up for my kids again. I started exercising regularly. I started reading for fun and rediscovering the parts of me that were, well, me. And slowly, my heart led me to find a new love in a new way. I had the idea to start a small business where I could help nonprofits navigate their digital marketing efforts with less stress and more results. I knew from working with nonprofits firsthand what overwhelmed them and what intimidated them. I knew what held them back. And I knew how to help. It was a slow-build and it’s been quite the journey but today, I’m helping nonprofits finally feel empowered about their digital homes and giving them the tools they need to grow their reach and impact online. After almost six years, I finally feel like myself again and through setting healthy boundaries, using the gifts I’ve been given, and a little bit of magic, I’m living a life better than I ever imagined. On the personal side of life, I’m happily married to my husband Scott, a mom of two awesome boys, and a dog mom to our chocolate Labradoodle, Kai. I have an incurable case of wanderlust and a list a mile long of places I dream to visit. However, here at home in the Mid-Ohio Valley, I enjoy watching movies, listening to podcasts, reading books, and getting outside for long walks with my dog!

Not all digital accessibility audits are created equal.

A lot of what's out there is a $99 automated scan that spits out a generic report nobody knows what to do with. That's not what I do and definitely not what I recommend.

My audits are thorough, manual reviews that cover everything from color contrast and keyboard navigation to screen reader behavior, heading structure, images, interactive elements, and more. Every issue gets documented with a severity rating and a clear, specific recommendation so you or your website designer actually knows what to fix. (And yep, I'll even take a look at all those PDFs you have linked on your site to ensure those are meeting guidelines, too!)

At the end, you get a final report you can hand off or keep for your reference, along with a walkthrough video where I personally go over the findings to give you additional tips for easy fixes. Plus, you get my Access for All digital course so you can start building accessibility into your process going forward.

I’m currently booked up for audits, but will be releasing more available dates soon, so stay tuned!

📷 I love using Asana to keep my projects on track! If you’re not using a tool like this to keep projects moving forward, communication on point, and deadlines in check, you might be missing out. Curious about how to use Asana? Send me a DM, and I’ll be happy to help!

I've had the privilege of maintaining the website for GiveMore Connections for years, and I love supporting the work they do in our community.

Helping working families, connecting couples, making therapy affordable for everyone, and providing much-needed mental health support for those who've served our country - they are an organization with boots on the ground and a heart for service. If you haven't heard of them, they're worth knowing about.

It’s a great time to be connected to them, as their annual fall fundraiser, One Mysterious Evening, early-bird tables go on sale on Monday. The event sells out every year, so snagging a table early is a great move.

Go follow GiveMore Connections on Facebook to stay in the loop, and if you need more info, I’ll link their website below.

Does anyone need a photo of an emperor tamarin monkey for their website?

The announcement today that the Smithsonian is contributing 1,000 photos to Unsplash has me thinking about stock photos!

Here are three stock photo mistakes you might be making on your website:

1. Using the most popular stock photos

This makes your website look generic, might make viewers question your authenticity, and might harm your SEO since Google also prioritizes fresh, original content, including photos!

2. Using stock photos at their original size

Stock photos are notoriously large file sizes. Use any free resizing tool (or the image preview option on Mac) to reduce the file size to 500KB or less to improve site loading times.

3. Not renaming your stock photos

Like any image on your website, these photos should have a descriptive (non-spammy) file name and alt text for accessibility.

Do not buy the hype.

Google made it official: there's no separate playbook for AI search.

Merchynt breaks it all down here:

Google just killed "GEO" and "AEO." In a recent update, Google made it official: there's no separate playbook for AI search — Generative Engine Optimization ...

Many people's first instinct with AI is to use it for content creation. But if you're spending your limited time asking Claude (or your AI of choice) to make a generic flyer for your event that looks like everyone else’s and is likely killing your brand identity, you’re leaving the more valuable stuff on the table.

The behind-the-scenes work, logistics, and documentation are where AI can actually help you move the needle in your organization or business. Here are three ways to use AI for your next event that have nothing to do with graphics.

1️⃣ Create an event plan.

Before an event, tell Claude what you’re planning and ask it to help you cover all your bases. What did you forget? What could go wrong? What vendors do you need? What's your rain plan? It's surprisingly good at this since it uses all the public data on events to predict what you might need.

2️⃣ Build your event day runsheet.

Once you have your event plan, ask Claude to turn it into a detailed runsheet for the day. Give it your start time, your program order, vendor arrival times, and key contacts, and it will organize everything into a timeline your whole team can follow.

3️⃣ Debrief after an event.

Right after an event, brain dump everything into Claude. Tell it what worked, what didn't, attendance numbers, complaints, and wins, and ask it to help organize that into a debrief document you can actually use next year.

Until last week, the Mattressmax website hadn't been updated in four years, so we gave it a refresh! New mattress collections, new accessories, updated graphics, and a fun video from owner Barbara, all about pillows (yes, really, and you might be using the wrong pillow!)

We also took advantage of some of Squarespace's newer features, including subtle hover effects that make the whole experience feel more polished and as always, some fun custom touches from our toolbox.

Updating your website makes the user experience even better AND signals to Google (and now AI search engines) that you have fresh content, helping you get better visibility in search results.

I’m grateful that clients keep coming back, year after year, for help with keeping their websites current! And if you need a new mattress, this is the place to go in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Barbara and John are experts and will take great care of you.

Every page on your website should have one main goal.

That doesn't mean only one button or one link. It means that every headline, image, paragraph, and icon should move the visitor toward that goal. If a piece of content isn't doing that, it's just distracting from your main point.

Before you add anything to a page, ask yourself: Does this help the visitor take the action I want them to take? If the answer is no, it probably doesn't belong there.

📷 Still loving this website we launched earlier in the year for the West Virginia Hospitality & Travel Association!

The algorithm probably won't show this post to you... Or maybe it will, since it was written by a human and the graphic wasn't created by AI. Who knows?

Here are a few excerpts from Cal Newport's latest email on increased submissions to the journal "Organization Science." This is my favorite email to get each week, and I highly recommend his work to anyone who wants to cultivate a deeper, more focused life.

"Most people assume that AI produces cleaner, more polished text. And in some narrow dimensions, it does…but on the measures that capture whether a reader can actually parse and absorb the prose, AI writing is worse…[using] longer words, more complex sentence structures, more jargon, and more nominalizations.”

"These tools make individual researchers' lives easier in the moment (writing is hard!), but they are leading to worse outcomes for the field as a whole."

The takeaway here is simple: "Making things. faster or easier is not the same as making things better."

You may have gotten an email recently from a firm warning you that your website isn't compliant with the DOJ's new accessibility ruling and offering to fix it for “just a few thousand dollars.”

Here's what you actually need to know:

The DOJ extended the compliance deadline in April 2026. Larger jurisdictions now have until April 2027, and smaller ones until April 2028. So no, you're not in immediate legal jeopardy. Don’t let a spammy firm convince you otherwise.

That said, accessibility still matters for your users, your credibility, and yes, for compliance. If the accessibility accommodations you make in your physical building were suddenly unavailable, you’d make it a point to get them fixed, right? Well, digital accessibility is equally important.

And before you are tempted to just throw on the overlay widget (you've seen them — the little accessibility icon that floats on the screen), remember that those are a band-aid that won't hold up when tested by real users or assistive technology. Real accessibility work happens in the code and the content, not a one-size-fits-all plugin. (If you want to read about the FTC order that required one of those overlay companies to pay $1 million for deceptive claims, I’ll leave the link below.)

Actual WCAG compliance isn’t something that any firm can fully remediate for a flat fee of a few thousand dollars. That number might get you an audit, but it won't get you a compliant site.

If you received one of those emails and you're not sure what to do, reach out. I hold a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility credential, and I'm happy to talk through where your site actually stands and what realistic next steps look like (without the scammy tactics).
