That closet full of old desktops and dead laptops isn't just clutter β€” it's a compliance violation waiting to happen.

If those retired machines ever touched client, patient, or employee data, HIPAA, the FTC Safeguards Rule, and New Jersey's Identity Theft Prevention Act all say you're still responsible for what's on those drives. Formatting doesn't erase anything β€” it just removes the index. Anyone with free recovery software can pull it back.

In our latest blog, we break down the 3 hidden risks of holding onto old computer equipment (compliance, security, and cost) and the exact 5-step process we use to retire hardware safely β€” inventory, migration check, drive destruction, certified recycling, and updated records.

Ever landed after a long flight, opened your laptop, and found yourself locked out of your own work email?

It's called an "impossible travel" lockout β€” and it's actually your security software doing its job. The good news: it's completely avoidable with one quick step before you leave. We walk through exactly what to tell your IT department (or MSP) before your next trip, so you land and stay logged in. Read it here: https://emdtec.com/cybersecurity/it-travel-notice/

Would you know what to do in the first hour after a cyberattack? Most business owners don't β€” and that first hour is usually what decides how much you lose.

We wrote a straightforward, no-jargon guide walking through exactly what to do: what to disconnect, who to call first, how to report it, and whether paying a ransom is ever a good idea.

Quick question: when's the last time someone on your team reused a password, or almost clicked a fake login page?

Passkeys fix both problems. Instead of typing a password, you sign in with the same fingerprint, face scan, or PIN you already use to unlock your phone β€” and there's no password for anyone to steal, guess, or trick out of you.

Microsoft 365 already supports them for free, and it's a lot faster than you'd think (about 3 seconds vs. over a minute with a traditional password + MFA code).

Curious if it's worth rolling out at your business? We cover what to know and what to watch for in our latest blog β€” check it out: https://emdtec.com/?p=19901

Still running Windows 10? Microsoft stopped sending security updates for it in October 2025, so new vulnerabilities won't get fixed. Your computer still works, but it's an easier target now.

We break down your 3 options (upgrade, buy time, or replace) here: https://emdtec.com/blog-category/microsoft/windows-10-end-of-support/

You'd never leave your work laptop unlocked at a coffee shop. But your phone? It has the same company email, files, and saved logins β€” and it's way easier to lose. πŸ“±

A quick checklist for any phone with work stuff on it:

βœ… Screen lock turned on (PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock)
βœ… Automatic updates left on
βœ… Apps only from the App Store or Google Play
βœ… A way to remotely wipe it if it goes missing

And if your team uses personal phones for work β€” the work data can live in its own separate space that IT can lock or erase without ever touching personal photos, texts, or apps.

A little setup now saves a big headache later. πŸ”’

Nobody thinks it'll happen to them. Then one afternoon, the files stop opening, staff start asking why they're locked out, and a ransom note turns up in the inbox. The first hour after a ransomware attack matters more than any other.

Move fast and calmly, and you limit the damage. Panic, and you can make it a whole lot worse (paying the ransom, wiping the evidence, missing your insurance window).

We made this 1-minute video to walk you through exactly what to do, step by step, so if it ever happens to you or someone you know, there's a clear plan to follow.

60 seconds now could save you a very expensive week later

Ever scan a QR code without a second thought? So does everyone else β€” and that's exactly what scammers are counting on. QR code phishing ("quishing") hides malicious links inside images, letting them slip past email filters that would normally catch a bad link. Once scanned, you're usually on your personal phone, outside the protections your work devices have. In our newest blog post, we break down what these scams look like (fake invoices, delivery notices, even stickers slapped over real codes) and share 7 practical ways to protect your business. Check it out and share it with your team!
