10 doors. 3 days. One major access control upgrade.

DLM just completed a full UniFi Access retrofit for a local Dayton warehouse whose aging system was failing—and the wiring gave us plenty to uncover.

Nothing was labeled. Ports were dead. Locks, request-to-exit devices, and readers for the same door were scattered across different boards. Relays were tied into badge-reader wiring with no clear purpose. Years of changes, service work, and failing components had created a cable chaos trap.

Other companies had quoted a full recable and all-new door hardware. DLM saw an opportunity to save the customer significant money through in-depth troubleshooting.

That’s exactly what we did. Our team traced circuits, diagnosed wiring issues, and worked through the failures to bring all 10 doors onto the new system while retaining existing cabling and door hardware.

Now the customer has:

• Centralized control of all 10 doors
• Remote access management without being on-site
• Remote door unlocking for authorized staff and visitors
• Easy badge management and access schedules
• Audit logs showing credential activity and access events

Three days of installation and troubleshooting saved the customer significant money and got their facility back up and secure—with a modern system that’s easier to manage and service.

The customer is ecstatic with the results, and we’re proud to have delivered.

Have a failing access control system? Before committing to replacing all your wiring and door hardware, let DLM take a look.

What started as a straightforward access control upgrade turned into two days of “where does THIS wire go?” 🔎😅

DLM was called in to help a local Dayton warehouse with a failing access control system. The plan: install a new retrofit system while reusing their existing cabling and door hardware to keep replacement costs down.

Then we opened the cabinets.

No labels. No wire markers. Cables heading in multiple directions through multiple power supplies. Request-to-exit sensors and locks connected to different boards than the card readers serving those same doors.

A badge reader at one panel. Its door lock somewhere else. And a whole lot of tracing in between.

That turned a simple upgrade into two days of troubleshooting, testing, and figuring out how everything was actually connected.

This is the part of security work you don’t always see in the finished photos. Sometimes the biggest job is making sense of what’s already there.

Good wiring, clear labels, and documentation matter—especially to the next person opening that cabinet.

Locks and Rex’s sharing the same power output, causing the Rex to shunt power upon lock deactivation.
Badge reader power coupled with lock power, ran through excess relays not needed.
20g wire doubled up to power locks.
Loops ran between rim strikes for reasons unknown.
One power supply powering Rex’s and electric strikes with a fire alarm tie in. Why?
One power supply powering mag locks and relays with no fire alarm tie in. Why’d you not tie in the mag locks?
A system with zero access.
As soon as you touched one board, other boards power cycled.
It looked like a Christmas tree watching all the boards power cycle, the red and green leds blinking.

The techs got a serious introduction to cable chaos.

It was a door strike cut in training day today for the DLM team.
Hosted by Camden Doors, at Wesco.
The team got to play with some tools, cut in some strikes, and take home their mini door frames with freshly cut in strikes.

This is why hiring the right security vendor matters.

We’re currently working in a brand new retail store that hasn’t even opened yet. DLM did not install the camera system, but while we’re installing the network, we noticed the camera cabling was left exposed and hanging down the walls.

That is not just poor workmanship. It is a security risk.

Customers will be able to see the cables, and worse, someone could tamper with the system. The front door camera is the biggest concern. You can reach up from ground level, without a ladder, and cut the cable to their brand new camera system.

A security system should protect your business, not create an easy weak point.

Hire the right company. Make sure your cameras, cabling, network, and access control are installed clean, secure, and built to last.

This holiday drive with FLOC Dayton is personal to us.

At DLM, we believe every kid deserves to feel remembered, loved, and excited on Christmas morning. No child should wake up wondering if Santa skipped their house.

That’s why we’re collecting new, unwrapped toys to help local kids and families in need this Christmas season. Every donation, big or small, can help bring a little more joy, hope, and relief to a family right here in our community.

If you’re able, please consider donating a toy and helping us make Christmas brighter for Dayton-area kids.

Because every child deserves a gift. Every family deserves support. And no kid should feel forgotten on Christmas.

Monday morning at the DLM office.

The crew got together to talk about where we’re headed, how we keep improving, and how we continue building something that lasts.

DLM started with the goal of protecting local businesses, but it’s becoming more than that. It’s becoming a team, a standard, and a future we’re all working toward together.

Proud of this crew and excited for what’s next.
