What if the job title isn’t the best place to start when you’re hiring?

Technology roles continue to evolve, and professionals often bring skills that extend beyond the title they currently hold. Understanding the skills behind the title matters.

Before asking, “Who has held this exact job before?” ask, “What does this person need to be able to do?”

This shift can open the door to candidates whose experience aligns with the work even when their previous title doesn’t match perfectly.

Your resume tells your career story, but when you’re applying for a specific technology role, you need to make the connection between your experience and the work clear. Our blog, “How to Turn Your Resume Into a Screening Tool,” looks at how candidates can make that connection easier for hiring managers to see.
If a position calls for specific technologies, experience or problem-solving capabilities, make sure your resume brings those relevant skills forward. Read the blog:

Your resume is not a marketing tool. Your resume is a screening tool. In today’s competitive IT job market, hiring managers are not reading resumes for

Recent research indicates 53% of postings for roles such as AI Engineer and ML Engineer required skills drawn from at least two established technology roles. If the title doesn’t fully describe the work, searching by title alone can lead you toward the wrong talent pool. At TeamSoft, we start with a conversation. We learn about the work, identify the skills behind the requirement and draw from a vetted network of technology professionals whose skills, experience and career goals we understand. Our goal is to find the right alignment between the work and the person doing the work.

Your technology staffing partner should understand more than the job description. At TeamSoft, we take time to understand the business, the team, the work and the type of professional who will fit the need. Through this understanding, we build stronger partnerships and connect clients with technology talent who become an integral part of the team.

In technology hiring, moving quickly to fill a role only helps when you’re hiring for the skills, experience and capabilities the work actually requires. The right hiring process starts with alignment. Understand what the team needs, define what success looks like and then find the professional whose skills fit the work. Speed matters but so does making sure you’re headed in the right direction.

What if your hiring requirements are filtering out the talent you actually need?

Consider a technology job post that lists a requirement of eight years of experience with a specific platform.

Now consider what the team actually needs from that person - someone who understands the underlying architecture, can learn a new platform quickly, work across teams and solve problems that haven't been encountered before.

Those aren't necessarily the same requirements.

As technology changes faster, past experience can become a poor predictor of future performance.

The better question may be:

Which skills and capabilities will help this person succeed in the work our team needs to accomplish?

Stay tuned for our latest blog on why skills alignment matters more than years of experience in technology hiring.

AI can help with recruiting. But should AI be the one deciding who gets overlooked? A recent Fast Company article looks at the importance of questioning AI-generated information rather than accepting its answers at face value. The same principle applies to resume screening. Keyword matches can identify candidates who fit the search criteria, but they can also miss transferable skills, practical experience and potential.

We explored this issue in our blog, Technology Hiring Challenges: Why Strong Candidates Get Overlooked: https://hello.peoplelinkgroup.com/3UZoVcg

At TeamSoft, our recruiters bring the human evaluation back into the process by understanding the person behind the resume and how their experience could translate to the role.

What do you think: How much should AI influence a hiring decision?

09/23/2026

You can tell from a resume where a candidate has worked, but not necessarily how well their skills align with the work ahead. A technology professional may have 10 years of experience but still need to develop capabilities for a new environment. Another candidate may have fewer years of experience on paper but bring the combination of technical skills, problem-solving ability and related experience your project requires.

Hiring becomes more precise when organizations define the capabilities behind the role rather than relying on years of experience alone. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog where we'll explore why skills alignment matters more than experience in tech hiring.
