What could a school day look like if there were more room to adapt it to the children in it?

Meet microschools: small learning communities that often offer a more personalised approach to education.

There’s no single microschool model. Some bring different ages together. Some build learning around projects. Others combine individual lessons, online resources, and group activities.

Picture children exploring the same topic in different ways: one writing about it, another building a model, another working through the maths behind it. A shared experience with room for different starting points.

But a small group is only the beginning. What matters is how the adults teach, support each child, and notice when something isn’t working.

If you’re exploring a microschool, ask how it tracks progress, supports different learning needs, and helps children build friendships. Costs, schedules, and legal arrangements vary, too.

What becomes possible when we reimagine education together?

Earlier this year, Aurélie Manneback, co-founder of Les Herbes Hautes, a democratic school in Couvin, Belgium, visited Guanacaste Children’s Community Center (GCCC) in Costa Rica.

What connects these two learning communities is a willingness to rethink what education can look like and to create it together, with children, families, and educators helping shape the experience.

Democratic education gives young people a meaningful voice in their learning and in the decisions that affect their community. It makes room for curiosity, shared responsibility, and learning through relationships and everyday experiences.

Aurélie’s visit offered an opportunity to exchange ideas across different approaches and settings, exploring how communities can learn from and support one another.

Through BTHM, we’re connecting people and places exploring these possibilities around the world. Each connection brings new perspectives and opportunities to build on one another’s experience.

When we imagine changing our lives, we tend to compare the uncertainty ahead with the familiarity of what we already know.

We ask: What if it doesn’t work? What if we earn less? What if a different way of learning isn’t right for our child?

Those questions deserve answers. So does this one: What happens if nothing changes?

Another year of the same schedule. Another year of postponing something important. Another year getting better at managing a life we keep wishing felt different.

Sometimes staying is the right choice. There may be people, stability, and opportunities worth staying for. But it’s worth knowing whether we’re staying because this life still fits or because we haven’t given ourselves room to consider anything else.

This Freedom Friday, ask yourself: What part of your life are you ready to choose more deliberately?

School or home education? Some families explore a combination of both.

It’s called flexi-schooling. A child stays enrolled in school, attends for agreed periods, and is home educated for the rest of their learning time.

For example, an agreed week might include three days at school and two days of parent-led learning. Those days could include reading, practical projects, museum visits, or exploring a question that sparked their curiosity.

The idea is to bring together school connections and learning experiences that families can shape around their child.

It takes planning, time, and clear agreement about who is responsible for what. Availability and requirements depend on where you live. In England, for example, the school must agree, and it can decline a request.

Before exploring it, ask: Does the school offer this? How would learning connect across both settings? Can our family support the home education days?

Learning to navigate more than just a map.

Because when children experience the world, they’re learning how to navigate so much more than roads and directions.

They’re learning how to:
🗺️ Find their way somewhere new
🗣️ Communicate when they don’t have all the words
🤝 Connect with people who are different from them
🧠 Think through unfamiliar situations
💭 Make decisions and ask questions
🌱 Adapt when things don’t go according to plan
✨ Trust themselves enough to figure things out

That’s the kind of learning that stays with you.

Worldschooling gives children opportunities to experience the unfamiliar — and discover that they are capable of navigating it. 🌎

Because eventually, we’re not just preparing them to navigate a map.

A new country can become a geography lesson.
A local market can become a math lesson.
A new language can become a communication lesson.
A hike can become a science lesson.
A conversation with someone from another culture can become a lesson in perspective. 🌍

Worldschooling invites families to look at the world differently — to stay curious, embrace new experiences, and find meaningful learning in the places, people, cultures, and communities around them.
