In Ohio, a resident is now suing the city Worthington over its deer-reduction program, arguing that he doesn’t want his two children exposed to seeing dead deer. That reaction says a lot about how far removed some people have become from the realities of food, wildlife, and nature. The deer aren’t being removed for sport or spectacle, they’re being professionally harvested for population control, public safety, and ecological balance, with the meat donated. Yet the idea that children might see where food actually comes from has become controversial, as if the process itself is something shameful or wrong.

The problem is that hiding kids from reality doesn’t make them kinder, smarter, or more compassionate, it makes them weaker and more disconnected. When children grow up believing food magically appears in plastic packages at a grocery store, they lose any understanding of life, death, responsibility, and respect for animals. That disconnect is exactly why so many adults struggle to grasp hunting, conservation, or even basic food systems. Taking kids hunting, fishing, or even just being honest about where meat comes from doesn’t harden them, it grounds them. Reality isn’t the enemy. Shielding kids from it is.
