This month we're spotlighting The W**e Alley in Renton, owned by Rachel Lott and Jim Lott.

Jim had wanted to own a w**e shop for over twenty years. When the previous owner passed away unexpectedly in 2023, Rachel and Jim reached out to the family, and by December of that year, they'd taken over a business that's been part of this community since 2005.

They didn't just keep it running. They rebuilt it into what Rachel calls a "third place," somewhere people come to grab a glass of w**e, work for an afternoon, or run into a neighbor they haven't seen in a while. They added a lounge, brought in b**r and non-alcoholic options for anyone who doesn't drink, and started hosting everything from plant bingo to book clubs.

Rachel told us the best part isn't the w**e, it's the people. She's watched customers become friends just from striking up a conversation at the next table over. That's the kind of thing you can't manufacture, it happens because someone built a space where people actually want to slow down.

The W**e Alley has since picked up Best W**e Shop, Best Bar, and Best Woman-Owned Business in Renton. If you haven't stopped in yet, we'd encourage you to. Say hi to Rachel or Jim, you'll probably end up staying longer than you planned.

An employee gives notice, and suddenly nobody can remember who has the login to what.

By the time someone resigns, the decisions that make their exit clean or messy were already made, often in the first few weeks of onboarding. A shared login here, a quick SaaS sign-up there, a personal laptop someone used until company hardware arrived. None of it feels like a decision at the time. It just feels like how things are.

A clean offboarding takes about 90 minutes of IT time. The messy version can take three weeks, and it usually starts the same way: someone has to ask the departing employee to help reconstruct the list of tools they had access to, on their way out the door.

The four shortcuts we see most often:

1️⃣ Letting new hires sign up for their own SaaS tools, which means you can't reset the account without notifying them.

2️⃣ Tolerating personal devices "just until we get them sorted," which somehow never gets sorted.

3️⃣ Sharing logins across a team to avoid paying per seat, so removing one person means resetting the password for everyone.

4️⃣ Letting client relationships live in one person's inbox, so when they leave, the client doesn't know who to talk to anymore.

We put together the full breakdown, plus a 60-day plan to close these gaps before your next departure.

Your network security and your retirement plan don't seem like they belong in the same conversation, but they're both things a lot of business owners put off until it's urgent.

On Wednesday, September 30th from 11am to 1pm, we're teaming up with WealthWave at the Renton Chamber of Commerce for a Lunch & Learn: Secure Your Network and Your Retirement Plan.

This one's invitation-only, and we've got a limited number of complimentary tickets to share. If you'd like to join us, send us a message and we'll get you set up.

One piece of advice we give businesses before completing a cyber insurance renewal is simple: don't guess.

Today's applications ask about technical safeguards like MFA, EDR, immutable backups, privileged access management, and vendor risk. If you're not sure whether you meet a requirement, don't automatically assume the answer is "yes."

The biggest problems usually don't come from businesses trying to mislead their insurance carrier. They happen when someone answers technical questions without fully understanding what's being asked.

Taking the time to verify your environment before submitting your renewal can save a lot of headaches later, and it gives you a much clearer picture of your overall security posture.

We break down what underwriters are looking for in our latest blog: https://www.watchtowerits.com/how-to-complete-your-cyber-insurance-renewal-without-costly-mistakes/

Tony Sollars headed out to Crown Donuts in Maple Valley early this morning to grab 12 boxes of donuts.

Since then, he and Mike have been pounding the pavement with cybersecurity information, donuts, and smiles to introduce WatchTower to local law firms.

We love to meet local companies, bring some treats and cheer, and provide at least a snippet of actionable information to help businesses move towards an increased technology security posture.

One of the biggest surprises on today's cyber insurance applications has nothing to do with insurance. It's backups.

We've talked with businesses that confidently answer "yes" when asked about backups because they use Microsoft 365. Then they find out that's not what the insurance carrier is asking.

The question isn't whether your data lives in the cloud. It's whether you have an immutable backup that's been tested and can't be deleted if an attacker compromises an administrator account.

Cloud storage and cloud backup are two different things, and understanding that distinction is becoming increasingly important. It can affect your insurance renewal, but more importantly, it can determine how quickly your business recovers after a cyberattack.

The first hour after a cyberattack can make a big difference in how quickly your business recovers.

When something goes wrong, it's natural to want to fix it immediately. But rushing to reboot systems, delete suspicious files, or reset everything can sometimes make the situation worse and make it harder to determine what happened.

Instead, focus on these first steps:

1️⃣ Isolate affected devices to help prevent the attack from spreading.

2️⃣ Notify your IT provider or incident response team right away.

3️⃣ Preserve evidence by avoiding unnecessary changes to impacted systems.

4️⃣ Determine what systems and accounts have been affected before taking broad action.

5️⃣ Communicate with employees so everyone knows what's happening and what they should, or shouldn't, do.

The best time to create an incident response plan is before you need one.

Knowing who to call and what steps to take can reduce downtime, protect critical data, and help your team stay focused when every minute counts.

No business wants to experience a cyberattack, but having a plan in place can make all the difference.

Security tip: Take a few minutes to clean up your browser extensions.

Browser extensions can be incredibly useful, but they can also become an overlooked security risk.

Many extensions request permission to read website data, access your browsing activity, or interact with the pages you visit. Over time, it's easy to accumulate extensions you no longer use or even remember installing.

Every few months, take a quick look through your installed extensions and ask yourself:
▪️ Do I still use this?
▪️ Do I recognize who published it?
▪️ Does it really need the permissions it's asking for?

If the answer is no, remove it.

It's a small habit that can reduce unnecessary access to your data and make your browser a little more secure.
