What's Cloudflare!?!?

Cloudflare is all over the news today. But what exactly is it, and does your business website need it?

Cloudflare helps protect websites from malicious bots, hackers, automated attacks, and unwanted traffic. It can also improve website performance and help keep your online presence running smoothly.

At Traverse City Web Design, we use Cloudflare regularly, including on our own website. But we don't believe every small business needs it. In our latest article, we explain how Cloudflare works, the difference between free and paid protection, and when we recommend adding it to a business website.

WordPress vs. Wix vs. Squarespace: Which Is Best for Small Businesses?

Choosing the right website platform isn't always straightforward. Wix and Squarespace make it easy for beginners to get started, while WordPress offers greater flexibility, customization, and long-term potential.

At Traverse City Web Design, we prefer WordPress paired with Elementor, but there's a reason for that: we have the experience to build, configure, optimize, and maintain it properly.

The best website isn't necessarily the easiest one to build. It's the one that works best for your business.

Made about 40 'feature backgrounds' for Olympic Case Company this week. They make big custom cases for rock stars and sports teams, the military, hospitals and more.

We took the company's original photos and cleaned them up. . .A LOT. 50+ page site. . .whew! Cool company.

We just added a new case study to the Traverse City Web Design portfolio — and it’s one we’re especially proud of.

The new LMAS District Health Department website is a 60-page public health resource serving Luce, Mackinac, Alger and Schoolcraft counties in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. This was a large, information-heavy project that required much more than a visual redesign. We focused on clear navigation, accessibility, mobile usability, content organization and making important public health information easier for residents to find.

Built in WordPress, the site gives the LMAS team an easy way to manage news, public notices, job opportunities, health resources, environmental health information and more. We also continue to provide ongoing hosting and website management after launch.

Projects like this are a great example of the kind of Michigan web design work we love most — building thoughtful, useful websites that serve real communities.

We’re proud to showcase one of our long-running municipal website projects: the official website for the Village of Central Lake, Michigan.

We designed and developed the site with WordPress and Elementor, but the real work went far beyond the build itself. We spent time researching how residents, Village staff, business owners and visitors would actually use the website, then organized everything around those real-world needs.

The site makes it easy to find Village Council agendas and minutes, zoning information, ordinances, financial reports, utility payment links, Police Department and DPW resources, Thurston Park campground information and more.

We also photographed Central Lake ourselves, walking through the Village, talking with business owners and capturing the places that give the community its character. That original photography helped us build a site that feels distinctly like Central Lake instead of relying on generic stock imagery.

Today, Traverse City Web Design continues to manage and support the website, while Hosting North provides the managed WordPress hosting behind it. It’s a great example of the kind of long-term website partnership we love: thoughtful design, practical technology, local character and ongoing support.

We’re excited to share that Traverse City Web Design has been selected to design and develop the new website for Benzonia Public Library.

Libraries are such an important part of strong communities. They support reading, learning, public access to information, local history, education, technology, and connection — and we feel honored to help support that work through a new website built specifically for the Benzonia community.

We’ve had the opportunity to work with other Northern Michigan libraries, and those projects have been some of the most meaningful work we do. There’s something special about helping a public institution make its resources easier to find, easier to use, and more accessible to the people it serves.

We’ll be building the new Benzonia Public Library website this October and November, and we’re genuinely excited to get started.

One use-case of AI is that we can take an image like this one that a client sent us for a new website - backstage at some big show! - and create a web-ready graphic in about 30 seconds. It would take about 10 minutes for us to do the same thing in Photoshop. . .which we've done hundreds of times, literally. You can see the before and after here - the before is the vertical image that our client snapped and sent, the horizontal version is the version we used AI to transform for their website. . . once the image is created, we run it through a filter to remove AI detritus, resize it and put it in the file format we want. . .

We recently gave Busy Bubble Bee Cleaning’s website a major upgrade — expanding it from a single-page site into a five-page WordPress and Elementor website with stronger SEO, better content structure, and new AI/AEO optimization capabilities.

We also added Rank Math’s AI-focused SEO tools, structured the content to make it easier for search engines and AI systems to understand, and resubmitted the updated site to both Google and Bing.

This project is a great example of why we build websites on flexible platforms like WordPress. Busy Bubble Bee didn’t need to start over — we were able to take the original site and grow it into a much more powerful marketing tool.
