Applications are now open for the Gwyn Griffiths Underwater Robotics Award (GGURA) 2026.

Underwater robotics is entering an exciting period of development, with advances in autonomy, AI, sensing, and subsea vehicles creating new possibilities for how we explore, monitor, and work in the underwater environment.

As the technology evolves, so does the need to recognise the people helping to shape its future.

The award recognises outstanding contributions to underwater robotics from professionals in the early to mid-stages of their career, aged under 40.

The winner will receive £500 and a certificate, with applications welcomed from across industry, research, and creative activity in underwater robotics.

Raytheon and Composite Energy Technologies (CET) have successfully completed a submerged launch demonstration for the U.S. Navy featuring HADALUS, a low-cost, long-endurance Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) with a range exceeding 3,700 kilometers (2,000 nautical miles). Constructed with an all-carbon-fiber exoskeleton, the 10.4-meter autonomous drone is engineered to cost roughly one-third to one-fifth as much as comparable UUVs, making it a highly scalable platform for high-risk maritime operations.

During recent exercises on an undersea test range, HADALUS executed end-to-end submerged missions, demonstrating a "detect, reacquire, and engage" capability that consolidates complex undersea intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and targeting functions into a single autonomous asset. By integrating sonar, electronics, and modular payload bays into a low-cost frame, HADALUS allows the Navy to deploy distributed undersea mass without overexposing expensive, nuclear-powered attack submarines or risking aircrews in heavily monitored environments.

Developed from concept to full in-water testing in under 18 months, the platform provides U.S. commanders with persistent sensing and operational reach across vast, contested maritime zones like the Indo-Pacific while forcing potential adversaries to expend significant anti-submarine warfare resources to counter low-cost autonomous threats.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) selected Norway's Kongsberg and U.S.-based Oceaneering International to define an extra-large uncrewed undersea vehicle (XLUUV) for the U.S. Navy's Covert Autonomous Payload Delivery (CAMP) program, joining other parallel development teams like Anduril and a Metron-led coalition.

The contract focuses on concept definition, system architecture, and design trade studies with a preliminary design expected in Q3 2026 to create an autonomous platform capable of traveling over 1,000 nautical miles, operating at depths exceeding 200 meters without GPS, and deploying heavy payloads up to 21 feet long and 21 inches in diameter.

Leveraging Kongsberg's expertise in long-endurance autonomous underwater vehicles and Oceaneering's subsea integration capabilities, the initiative aims to provide standard modular payload emplacement such as mines, sensors, or electronic intelligence nodes in contested waters, allowing the Navy to expand covert undersea operational reach while mitigating cost overruns and delays seen in legacy programs like the Boeing Orca XLUUV.
