Raytheon and Composite Energy Technologies (CET) have successfully completed a submerged launch demonstration for the U.S. Navy featuring HADALUS, a low-cost, long-endurance Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) with a range exceeding 3,700 kilometers (2,000 nautical miles). Constructed with an all-carbon-fiber exoskeleton, the 10.4-meter autonomous drone is engineered to cost roughly one-third to one-fifth as much as comparable UUVs, making it a highly scalable platform for high-risk maritime operations.
During recent exercises on an undersea test range, HADALUS executed end-to-end submerged missions, demonstrating a "detect, reacquire, and engage" capability that consolidates complex undersea intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and targeting functions into a single autonomous asset. By integrating sonar, electronics, and modular payload bays into a low-cost frame, HADALUS allows the Navy to deploy distributed undersea mass without overexposing expensive, nuclear-powered attack submarines or risking aircrews in heavily monitored environments.
Developed from concept to full in-water testing in under 18 months, the platform provides U.S. commanders with persistent sensing and operational reach across vast, contested maritime zones like the Indo-Pacific while forcing potential adversaries to expend significant anti-submarine warfare resources to counter low-cost autonomous threats.
