🚨 One of your employees probably pasted client data into ChatGPT this week. 😬 They weren’t careless. They were busy, and their personal AI tool was one browser tab away.
That’s shadow AI: AI tools used for work without the company’s approval. It’s more common than most owners think:
→ 64% of employees at 50–500 person companies admit to using unauthorized AI tools (WatchGuard, 2026)
→ Shadow AI played a role in 43% of breached organizations this year, up from 20% the year before (IBM)
→ In May, a regional bank had to file an SEC disclosure after an employee ran customer Social Security numbers through an unapproved AI app. No hacker was involved.
🚫 The usual first move is to ban it. That tends to push AI use onto personal phones, where you can’t see any of it.
💡 What works better: find out what your team is already using, give them an approved tool they’ll want to use, and make the data rules clear.
So here’s the question for owners and leaders:
❓ If a client asked you tomorrow which AI tools touch their data, could you answer?
