Same account, two campaigns. One pays 71 cents a click, the other $2.88. But the pricey one drove most of the conversions. Cost per click doesn't tell you what's working. Check cost per conversion, conversion count and whether they're real leads. Want a second opinion on yours? Comment AUDIT. (Data: an account we manage, last 30 days. Name withheld.)

Same ads. Same number of clicks. One day costs 4x more than another.

In the Google Search campaigns we manage, over the last 30 days:

-Weekday clicks: about $3.10 each
-Weekend clicks: about $0.76 each

We got roughly 790 clicks a day either way. The weekend ones just cost a fraction.

This is a blend of several accounts, so it is not a rule for your business. Weekend clicks may turn into fewer calls. But most owners never check, and Q4 is when click costs tend to climb.

3 things to check this week:

In Google Ads, split your results by day of the week
Compare cost per lead (calls and form fills), not just cost per click
Lower bids on days that cost more and don't convert; raise them where leads are cheap

Same industry. Same Google. Two very different prices for a lead.

In two legal services accounts we manage, over the last 30 days:

Local Services Ads: about $227 per lead; Search ads: about $440 per lead

That is roughly double, and nobody would see it if they only looked at clicks or traffic.

These are different accounts, so it is not a perfect comparison. But it is a good reason to ask the question: what does a lead cost me in each place I advertise?

3 things to check this week:

List every campaign type you run (Search, Performance Max, Local Services, Display)
Divide spend by real leads (calls and form fills, not page views) for each
Move budget toward the cheaper lead, and fix tracking on any campaign you can't measure

One million views. Zero conversions recorded.

That is what one campaign looked like in an account we manage over the last 30 days: 1,002,481 impressions, $11,927 spent, 282 clicks.

On the report it looks big. In terms of what you can measure, it looks like nothing.

Awareness advertising (TV, video, display) can be worth paying for. But it is a different job than a search ad. A search ad catches someone who is already looking. A video ad introduces you to someone who is not.

If you spend on awareness, decide before you start how you will know it worked:

A way to count calls or form fills, even if it is rough
A watch on branded searches (people typing your name into Google)
A simple "how did you hear about us?" question at the front desk or on your booking form

If you can't answer those, the impressions number is just a nice-looking number.

What does one click cost on Google Ads? It depends on who you ask.

Here is what we saw in accounts we manage over the last 30 days:

Legal services: about $62 per click Reverse mortgage: about $39 per click Healthcare: about $1.60 per click Salon and spa: about 54 cents per click Restaurant: about 57 cents per click

That is over 100 times apart, on the same platform.

So when someone tells you "I pay $2 a click, is that good?", the honest answer is: it depends on what a customer is worth to you.

3 things to check this week:

What is one new customer worth to you in dollars?
How many clicks does it take you to get one real customer (a call or a booking, not a page view)?
Multiply the two. If your cost per customer is lower than what a customer is worth, you have room to grow. If not, fix that before adding budget.

Not sure of your numbers? Comment or DM "AUDIT" and I'll take a look.

Two campaigns in one account we audited, last 30 days.

Search reported 1,005 conversions.
Performance Max reported 28.

Easy call, right? Put the money on Search.

Then I checked what each one counts. Both campaigns recorded about 900 “Book appointment” events. Search counts them. Performance Max ignores them. Same behavior, different setting, a 35x gap on the dashboard.

And here is the other flag: nearly 1,900 “bookings” from about 2,800 clicks. That is not how real customers behave. It usually means the tracking is firing on a page load or a button click.

3 things to check in your own account:

Which actions each campaign counts (Goals > Conversions > Summary)
Whether “booking” or “lead” counts are close to your click count
Whether the number matches what actually shows up in your calendar or phone

Your Facebook ads report probably leads with Impressions. That number is easy to love and easy to misread.

Here is one account we manage, last 30 days: 80,253 impressions 30,504 people actually reached. Each person saw the ad about 2.6 times.

Another account on the same platform paid $26.33 per 1,000 impressions. This one paid $7.71. Same month, very different price, because the audience was different.

Three things to check in your own Ads Manager:
-Reach (people), not just impressions (views)
-Frequency. Under 3 is usually fine for a month. Climbing past that, your ad is getting stale.
-Cost per lead or booking, not cost per 1,000 views

Right now, more business owners are searching for Google Ads help than at any point in the last 12 months.

And advertisers are paying about $62.94 per click to show up when they do. That's the price of a ready-to-buy customer in this market.

Before you spend more this Q4, answer two questions:

-What is one new customer worth to you, in dollars?
-Is your Google Ads counting real phone calls and bookings, or just page views?

If you can't answer both, that's the first thing to fix. It's usually cheaper than adding budget.

Ads give you immediate exposure, while organic ranking is a long-term build with a lot of moving parts, so most local businesses do best working on both.

A warning flag in Google Ads wasn't the real problem. What the account was counting was. 👀

308 "conversions" = 308 button clicks, not 308 booked appointments.

ChatGPT now has ads, and the self-serve version rolled out to small businesses.

Should you jump in? Maybe, but not first.

A new ad channel only works if you can measure it. Before you spend a dollar anywhere new, check:

Do you know what one lead or booking costs you right now?
Are your calls, forms and bookings tracked correctly?
Does your offer and landing page turn clicks into customers?

If not, a new channel will just give you a new place to waste budget. If yes, test small, set a cap, and judge it on cost per booking, not clicks.

Want me to check your tracking before you test anything new? Comment or DM "AUDIT" and I'll take a look.
