Google just made its biggest change to Search in 25 years, and local businesses need to pay attention.
At Google I/O 2026, Google rolled out a completely redesigned, AI-powered search box that is now live globally. It expands as you type, suggests ideas beyond basic autocomplete, and lets you search using text, images, files, videos, or even your open Chrome tabs.
The part that really changes things for local businesses: Google Search can now act as an agent, calling businesses on your behalf and booking local services based on very specific criteria you set. Someone searching for a plumber, a salon, or a contractor may never actually visit your website before reaching out.
This shift could mean fewer direct clicks to your site as more people get answers and take action right inside Google.
The good news is that Google has confirmed that core SEO fundamentals still drive visibility in AI search. Unique, helpful content, a solid technical setup, and a complete Google Business Profile are what get you surfaced in AI responses, not any new tricks or workarounds.
Your Google Business Profile in particular plays a direct role in whether your business shows up in AI-generated local results. Reviews, accurate hours, photos, and service details all feed into how Google represents you.
If your profile is incomplete or your website content is thin, this update makes that a bigger problem than it was before.
