For federal contractors, September is a good time to take a closer look at the fundamentals: where CUI lives, whether assessments reflect the current environment, who has access to sensitive systems, how prepared the organization is to respond to an incident, and what requirements may be coming next.

The CMMC Phase 2 rollout may be paused, but that does not mean all cybersecurity and compliance responsibilities have stopped.

CMMC program elements remain operational; C3PAOs can continue conducting Level 2 mock and certification assessments, and prime contractors may still require certification from organizations in their supply chains.

Defense contractors should also continue reviewing applicable DFARS clauses, maintaining protections for Federal Contract Information and Controlled Unclassified Information, and preparing for future assessment requirements.

The pause creates more time. It should not create complacency.
