“We’re mid-migration, our team is stretched, and we can’t afford someone who needs months to get up to speed.” That was the ask from a Canadian fintech company building a payroll platform for mid-market businesses.
They were several years into active development, with a monolith-to-microservices migration already designed and partially implemented. What they needed wasn’t a green engineer to onboard — it was a senior one who could embed immediately and keep the existing rhythm intact.
Our engineer joined mid-migration, with the architectural decisions already made. The job wasn’t to redesign anything — it was to understand the system fast, respect what was already built, and move it forward without breaking it. No dedicated QA team meant quality responsibility sat fully with the engineering work itself. Every change was validated carefully because the refactor was still live.
Result: refactoring continued at pace, the team was reinforced exactly where they needed it, and delivery never lost momentum.
There’s no room for ego about an architecture you inherited. You learn it, respect it, and move it forward — that’s what senior engineering looks like in a real production environment.
