Naming things is hard.

I've been building this analytics platform for months, and last week I finally stopped calling it 'the platform' internally.

It has a name now. I'll share it soon.

But here's the real question I wrestled with: when you name a product, what should the name communicate?

Option A: What it does (descriptive — boring but clear)
Option B: How it makes you feel (emotional — memorable but vague)
Option C: What it enables (aspirational — my choice)

The name should tell you that this platform gives you something you didn't have before: visibility into your business that was previously locked away in spreadsheets and disconnected systems.

More coming soon. 👀

Founders — when you named your product, which approach did you take? Descriptive, emotional, or aspirational?

Scenario: A regional healthcare system with 8 clinics.

They need to track: patient volume trends, no-show rates, provider utilization, revenue per visit, insurance mix, and referral patterns — across all 8 locations.

Today? 8 separate spreadsheets. 1 admin spending 2 days/week consolidating. Numbers are 'close enough.' Nobody trusts the trends because the methodology changes every time.

What if instead:
→ Data pulled automatically from their PM system nightly
→ One dashboard showing all 8 locations with drill-down
→ 12-month trends building automatically over time
→ Anomaly flags when a location deviates from its baseline

Time to build: 3–4 weeks. Monthly cost: less than that admin's weekly salary.

This is the ROI story that makes analytics a no-brainer for healthcare ops.

3 Excel formulas that will change your life if you're still building reports manually:

1. XLOOKUP — replaced VLOOKUP and actually works when columns move. If you're still writing VLOOKUP, stop today.

2. LET — name intermediate calculations inside a formula. Turns unreadable nested formulas into something a human can debug.

3. LAMBDA — create custom functions without VBA. Build it once, name it, use it everywhere in the workbook.

All three are available in Microsoft 365. All three are free. All three will save you hours per week.

Yes, I'm an analytics platform builder telling you to get better at Excel. Because good analytics starts with understanding your data — regardless of the tool.

Which Excel feature has saved you the most time? Drop it below — I'm always learning new tricks too.

A stat that should change how we think about analytics investments:

The average mid-market company spends 3–5% of revenue on IT. For a $50M company, that's $1.5M–$2.5M.

Of that, approximately 2–4% goes to analytics and BI. That's $30K–$100K.

With that budget, you're choosing between:
→ 1–2 expensive consulting engagements per year (project-based, no continuity)
→ A handful of Power BI Pro licenses and hoping someone figures it out
→ An as-a-service platform that provides ongoing analytics capability

The market is shifting hard toward option 3. The embedded analytics market is growing at 14–16% annually for a reason: organizations want capability, not projects.

For the finance leaders — what percentage of your IT budget goes to analytics today? And is it enough?

A question I ask every prospective client:

'If your CEO walked in right now and asked for your customer profitability breakdown by segment — how long would it take to produce?'

The answers:
→ Fortune 500: 'I'd pull up the dashboard. 30 seconds.'
→ Mid-market: '...I'd need to pull some data together. Give me a week?'

That gap isn't about intelligence or work ethic. It's about infrastructure.

The Fortune 500 company spent $2M on their analytics platform. The mid-market company can't.

But what if the same capability cost $30K–$60K/year instead of $2M? What if it was ready in weeks instead of months?

That's not hypothetical anymore.

Be honest — how long would that CEO question take at your organization?

Today I'm sharing something most SaaS founders wouldn't:

The hardest part of building an analytics platform isn't the technology. It's the trust model.

When a company hands you their financial data, their patient records, their operational metrics — they're trusting you with the most sensitive information in their business.

So I built governance into the architecture from day one. Not as an add-on. Not as a checkbox. As a foundational layer:

→ SLA-backed uptime guarantees (not 'best effort')
→ Data isolation between clients (not shared tables with row filters)
→ Automated compliance monitoring
→ Full audit trails

Trust isn't a feature. It's the product.

When evaluating analytics vendors, what's the first security/governance question you ask? Curious what matters most to practitioners.

Scenario: A $40M manufacturing company with 3 plants.

Production data in an ERP. Quality data in a separate system. Maintenance logs in — you guessed it — Excel.

The plant manager wants to answer: 'When Machine 7 runs above 92% utilization, does our defect rate increase within 48 hours?'

That question requires joining data from 3 systems, applying time-series logic, and presenting it in a way that a plant manager (not a data scientist) can act on.

This isn't a $500K data science project. It's a well-designed analytics pipeline that someone who knows the Microsoft data stack can build in weeks, not months.

The barrier was never the technology. It was access to the right expertise at the right price point.

Manufacturing leaders — what's the one data question you wish you could answer but can't today?

If you're still emailing Excel reports every Monday, here's a 30-minute upgrade:

1. Put your Excel file in SharePoint or OneDrive
2. Connect Power BI Desktop (free) to it
3. Build one simple visual — a bar chart of your key metric by month
4. Publish to the Power BI service (free with any M365 license)
5. Share the link instead of the file

Congratulations — you just went from 'emailing spreadsheets' to 'sharing live dashboards' in under an hour.

Is this enterprise analytics? No. But it's the first step, and it literally costs nothing.

Have you tried connecting Power BI to your existing Excel files? What was your experience?

The hidden tax on mid-size companies:

You're too big for spreadsheets but too small for a dedicated BI team.

→ You can't hire a $150K data engineer for 20 hours of work per month
→ You can't justify $300K in BI consulting for 5 dashboards
→ You can't spend 6 months evaluating platforms when the CEO wants answers now

This gap — between 'we know we need analytics' and 'we can actually afford and implement analytics' — is where 80% of mid-market companies are stuck.

And it's exactly the problem worth solving.

Mid-market leaders — what's the single biggest barrier to better analytics in your organization? Budget? Talent? Time? Something else?

One of the most undervalued features in any analytics platform: historical data.

Most BI tools show you what's happening NOW. That's useful. But 'revenue was $420K last month' means nothing without context.

Was it up or down? Compared to what? Is the trend accelerating or decelerating? How does seasonality factor in?

I'm building a historical data warehouse into our platform that captures snapshots over time — so from day one, clients start accumulating the trend data that makes analytics actually useful.

6 months in, you have 6 months of trends. 2 years in, you have data no one else can replicate. That's the kind of asset that compounds.

How far back does your organization's analytics data go? Weeks? Months? Years? The answer usually surprises people.
