Today, we honor Marie Van Brittan Brown, the pioneering inventor whose work made homes safer and shaped modern surveillance technology.

In 1966, concerned for her safety while working long hours as a nurse, Brown designed the first home security system, a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system that allowed her to see, communicate with, and control access to her home remotely.

Her invention included multiple peepholes, a sliding camera, two-way microphones, a remote door unlock, and an emergency button to alert police—features that are still fundamental in modern security systems today.

Her groundbreaking design paved the way for modern home and commercial security systems, protecting millions of people worldwide and demonstrating how one innovative mind can transform daily life.

Marie Van Brittan Brown didn’t just invent a device—she created peace of mind and set the stage for a safer world.
