Orientation. In the first phase, this is when the designer will gather info from the client by asking questions and absorbing as much information as possible. For most projects, here are standard questions to ask the client in this phase, such as: what does the project entail, who is the audience, what is the budget, do you have design to work with already, etc. During this phase, the designer will gather information by listening to the client.

I often say to young/learning designers that “Design is not about decoration, design is about problem solving”. The “problem” is the project/whatever the client is bringing to you... your solution is to create a visual representation of their problem so that they can use it. Graphic Design is more than just creating something that looks great- it is also about going through the process to get to a final result. The way I approach problems is by going through 5 phases until I get to the end result.
