Stickley furniture and Harley-Davidson motorcycles — not exactly a pairing you'd expect, right?

At first glance, Mission Oak furniture and Harley-Davidson motorcycles don't have much in common. That's exactly why our team leaned into it.

For this 1980s campaign, our team paired a Stickley chair with a leather Harley-Davidson jacket draped over the back. Two "uniquely American" brands, unexpectedly brought together. The insight? Both appeal to the same audience: successful, established people with a taste for authenticity and quality that's built to last.

The campaign ran in Architectural Digest, then went on to appear in Metropolitan Home, Elle Decor, Old House Interiors, and Home — proof that a bold, unexpected idea can travel far beyond where it started.

It's a good reminder of what we believe at Cowley: the best marketing doesn't just follow the obvious playbook. Sometimes it's about finding the connection nobody else sees at first — and then having the confidence to run with it.

Throwback Thursday 📸

Vol. XI, No. 6. June 1985. $1.50 an issue. And there's our founder, Paul Cowley, gracing the cover of Central New York Business Review — Clio award in hand (and a phenomenal head of hair, we might add 😉).

The Clio Awards are the "Oscars" of advertising — one of the industry's oldest and most prestigious honors for creative excellence. This particular Clio was earned for our branding and design work for Zach's Delicatessen in Syracuse, founded by Bill Eberhardt (yes, the same Bill Eberhardt behind the Sherwood Inn and Phoebe's!).

Over 50 years later, the technology and tools we use have changed a lot, but what hasn't changed is the drive behind that award: doing great creative work for the clients who trust us with their brands.

Some things age well. Great work is one of them.

Last weekend, our Founder & CEO, Paul Cowley and our President, Gail Cowley attended the Laker Limo Charity Golf Classic at Vesper Hills Golf Club, teeing off for a cause that matters: safe, reliable transportation for local seniors and individuals with disabilities through the Laker Transportation Project.

A special shoutout to our client, FamilyCare Medical Group (FCMG), who was a tee sponsor for the event! It's always a good day when we also get to see our clients giving back to the community we all call home.

Award-winning work has been part of our story from the start.

This clipping is from Cablevision Magazine, August 18, 1986: Paul J. Cowley & Associates (now Cowley Associates) and our client Eastern Microwave Inc. took home the Cable Television Administration and Marketing Society's top print award for the "1985 Big Apple Campaign."

Pictured is Eastern Microwave's National Marketing Director Gil Korta and Pennie Gorney, our Account Executive at the time, accepting the award at CTAM's third annual luncheon in Boston.

It wasn't the campaign's first trophy, either — it had already earned an Art Director's Award and gold and silver honors from the Syracuse Advertising Club that same year.

Over 50 years, we've adapted right along with the industry — from print campaigns to websites, social media, and everything in between. The tools and technology have certainly changed, but some things haven’t — including our commitment to helping clients cut through the noise with strategies and creative concepts that get results.

Last night, we joined Making The City Smaller (MTCS) and Clear Path for Veterans for "School's Out for Summer" — an evening of lawn games, taking in the beautiful scenery, a bonfire, and s'mores at Clear Path's campus in Chittenango.

This is exactly the kind of work MTCS does so well: creating space for businesses and neighbors to connect with organizations doing meaningful work in our community. It was a much-needed invitation to show up, slow down, and be present with the people around us.

Events like this matter. They're how community gets built, one evening at a time. Grateful to MTCS for bringing us together and to Clear Path for hosting.
