After being in the computer repair industry for a little over a decade I have come to realize that it's often not just the skills that make you a great repairman, but how you communicate with your clients. The only valuable information I could provide them is when the last time I had my oil changed. Odds are that I will be clueless when they ask me any specific questions about my car. That is why

I only bring my car to my guy, Ian. Someone that knows his stuff and I know I can trust. At Spacebar, we are inspired to be like Ian. We know how frustrating, intimidating and confusing it can be when you have a computer problem. For instance, when you've lost all your sentimental pictures to a defective hard drive that wasn't backed up, or why you keep getting spam in your BEX email. While we can't always promise you we will deliver the news you would like to hear, we can promise you that we will be there.

Do You Really Still Need Antivirus with Windows 11?

The Question Everyone Asks

Windows 11 has beefed up its defenses — stronger locks, smarter police patrols, and constant neighborhood watch. With Microsoft Defender built in and updates rolling out quickly, many folks wonder: Is another antivirus even necessary anymore?

Do You Really Still Need Antivirus with Windows 11?

The Real Scoop
Think of your computer like a house in a secure community:

1. The house walls (Windows 11) are stronger than ever.

2. Regular inspections (updates) fix cracks before burglars sneak in.

3. Your local police (Microsoft Defender) patrol 24/7 and share info nationwide.

4. Extra funding (TPM & Secure Boot) ensures high-tech locks are standard.

If you maintain your system and update regularly, you’re already protected from most common threats. A third-party antivirus is like hiring a private security guard — helpful for high-risk users, but not required for everyday homeowners.

My Takeaway for You

For most people, keeping Windows 11 updated is enough. But if you’re unsure, or you want me to check your system’s security setup, that’s what I’m here for. Text or email me anytime — I’ll make sure your “digital house” stays safe.

Gabe’s Tech Bench (Part 3)

Last Time at the Bench
We talked about how your house is your C: Drive, your neighborhood is Windows 11, and your cars are your browsers. Because Windows 11 is secure, modern attacks don’t break into your house anymore — instead, they wait on the road, waving signs at stoplights, trying to jump into your car. Some even set up fake “dealerships” that trick you into paying for things you don’t need.

The lesson? Your cars are the weak link — and that’s where we need to add protection.

This Time at the Bench — How to Lock Your Cars

1. What is an Extension?
An extension is like an add-on for your browser. Think of it as a custom upgrade for your car — better locks, stronger alarms, or a GPS tracker. You can find extensions in your browser’s menu under Settings → Extensions (sometimes called “Add-ons”).

2. Select an Ad Blocker
We recommend AdGuard. I’ve used it for over 10 years with no issues, and it’s free. AdGuard blocks those sign-wavers at the stoplights — the pop-ups, the banners, the fake offers — before they even reach your window.

3. Boost Its Security
After you install AdGuard, don’t just leave it on default. Go into its Options / Settings and manually enable the stronger protections. That’s like arming the alarm, not just locking the door.

👉 If you’re unsure how to do this, contact Spacebar and I’ll walk you through it.

Why This Matters
Browsers are where modern attacks live. They’re the ones at the stop signs and red lights, trying to sell you things, wave you down, or quietly slip into your car. And once they’re in, they don’t just distract you — they take your data and sell it out behind your back.

Until Next Time
This is just the first tool. In the next part, we’ll go deeper into which other extensions are worth installing — and which ones are nothing but fake “dealer upgrades.”

If you have questions about your computer security, send me an email. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Gabe’s Tech Bench (Part 2)

Last Time at the Bench
We talked about how:

Your house = C: Drive

Your neighborhood = Windows 11 (safe, secure)

Your cars = browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

Because you’re already in a secure home and neighborhood with Windows 11, attacks these days don’t come in the form of traditional viruses breaking into your house. Instead, the focus has shifted — now the real target is your car, your browser.

Hackers don’t need to force the door; they ride along like hitchhikers, quietly collecting your info, then trick you with a fake “authorized dealer” who charges your card and vanishes.

The bottom line: your house is safe, but your cars are the new weak link.

This Time at the Bench

So how do you keep your cars locked, alarms armed, and hitchhikers out?

Keep the Doors Locked (Updates)
Make sure your browsers update automatically. Outdated browsers are like leaving the keys in the ignition.

Install an Alarm (Extensions)
Use an ad-blocker and a password manager. They’re your car alarm and secure key fob. Noisy enough to scare off most casual thieves.

Check the Parking Lot (Browser Hygiene)
Every so often, pop the trunk. Clear cookies, review saved passwords, and ditch shady extensions. Think of it like walking around the car before pulling out.

Insurance Policy (Backups & MFA)
Even the safest driver gets hit sometimes. Back up your important data and turn on multi-factor authentication. That way, even if someone gets your keys, they can’t drive off with the whole car.

Before You Drive Off
Windows 11 gave you a safe neighborhood. Now you know how to keep your cars from being hijacked — updates, alarms, clean-ups, and insurance. That’s your foundation.

But here’s the thing: seatbelts and locks are only the basics. There are custom tools you can bolt onto your browser that make your car nearly theft-proof. The right extensions can block hitchhikers before they even reach the door.

👉 Stay tuned for Part 3, where I’ll reveal which extensions every computer should have installed — and which ones are nothing but fake “dealer upgrades” designed to rip you off.

This Week’s Fix

“Your house is like your C: Drive. The neighborhood you live in? That’s your operating system. And your car — that’s your browser.

When you’re in Windows 11, you’ve moved into the safest neighborhood on the block. Strong security, well-lit streets, reliable protection. Hackers know this. So instead of trying to break into your home, they’ve started targeting your car.”

The New Target

Think about it. You drive your car every day — Chrome, Edge, Firefox. Each trip is your regular online routine: checking email, shopping, banking. You take the same route: 8 streets, 5 lights, 3 stop signs.

At every corner, people are waving signs:
“Blowout Sale!”
“Free Software!”
“Limited Offer!”

Most of us ignore them, just like we ignore pop-ups and sketchy ads. But here’s the catch: your browser isn’t a two-seater. It’s a double-decker bus. Sometimes even a triple. And without you realizing it, a hitchhiker hops on.

They don’t rob you right away. They ride quietly, watching, copying — your phone number, your email, your credit card.

The Breakdown
But a few miles later, something feels wrong. The ride isn’t smoother. It’s worse. The check-engine light flicks on. You call the dealer, no answer. You drive back to the shop — it’s gone. Empty lot. They’ve packed up overnight.

That’s how these browser scams work. Not a smash-and-grab. A slow game. They build trust, trick you into paying, and leave you with a car that’s worse off than before.

The Lesson
1 Your house (C: Drive) is still safe

2 Your neighborhood (Windows
11) is still secure.

3 But your car (browser)? That’s the weak link.

Closing Thought:
Windows 11 gave you the safest neighborhood. But the real question is: are your cars safe enough to drive in it?

👉 Stay tuned for the next newsletter, where I’ll show you how to properly secure yourself from this kind of attack.
