⚖️ THE LAW & AI — No. 1
Two of the biggest names in cybersecurity are in court arguing AI should not be allowed anywhere near their source code.
Cisco and Fortinet are being sued for patent infringement in Texas. The company suing them wants to use AI to analyze the source code they had to turn over. This week both sides told the judge they are "diametrically opposed": Cisco and Fortinet argue AI could "escape the sandbox," as in recent incidents. A judge must now decide how much AI belongs in the legal process itself.
Why this matters: If I paste company data into an AI tool — customer records, contracts, financials, passwords — I may lose control of it for good. It can be stored or absorbed into systems I can't see, and I can't take it back. Courts are starting to treat what goes into an AI as a hand-off to a third party — because that's what it is.
