Tonight after NHL on NBC we will be saying good night to one of the most hardworking communications satellites serving broadcasting, business, cable & mobile customers since 1996 AMC1. Its 24 C-band & 24 Ku-band transponders served all 50 states, southern Canada & the Caribbean. AMC1 is ending its lifespan & traffic is being transitioned to SES3. Most communication satellites have a have a design lifespan of 15 years. SES3 was successfully launched months ago & placed into orbit alongside AMC1's "box" for this transition. AMC1 was built by Lockheed Martin for GE Americom (formerly RCA Americom Inc.) & was known as GE1 before the company was sold to SES in 2001. She was launched Sept.8, 1996 on an Atlas 2 from the Cape. The satellite weighs around 3,152kg and consumes 5kW of power while in operation. Four solar panels arays are also fitted to the spacecraft for providing electricity to the satellite & to its battery packs. So tonight when you look toward the south western sky @ 103 Degrees, say Happy Retirement AMC1 thanks for the memories, keeping us all in touch & good night ... Job Well Done !!!
