Thinking out loud here.

I am very loosely thinking, emphasis on loosely and thinking is something I don't do much of - to take a walk from Chicago to Santa Monica along Old Route 66. I've been through the Old Country and now I want to visit Old US.

Maybe ... only maybe.

I'm not very strong or fast but I am pretty long on endurance.

We took 3 days to climb and it was about what I expected.

What I didn't see coming was the descent to Echevennoz. Today was unequivocally my hardest day.

I've stopped to rest on long days because I wanted to. Today I HAD to stop. Several times.

The descent was relentless. And my back grew tired and my pace became a crawl. With one hour to go, I walked an hour, but moved so slowly I still had an hour to go.

Climbing is hard. So is descending. I am more tuckered out now than any other day so far.

And did I mention it rained all day and the temps were in the high 30s and low 40s?

Woot!!!Checked in for my first flight!!Counting down in hours now.

DRY RUN: I took a dry run with my tiny backpack yesterday and it didn't sit well. I had to stuff my sleeping back liner and evening clothes as well as my rain gear into zip bags. My extras fit fine but the 'ride' of the pack wasn't comfortable.

I am opting to use my old backpack. It's bigger, softer and older (like me). I bought it in Shanghai almost 25 years ago.

The overall weight of my stuff is the same (6-7 lbs). But I have more room that I hope does NOT fill up.

Leaving in 2 days.

I'm flying Icelandair. They sent me a reminder this morning.

As if I needed it.

I woke up at 3:51 am - my head spinning abt ATM cards for cryin' out loud. Chase, Paypal, Monzo!!??

What's a Monzo card? Turns out it's the best option to avoid transaction fees. Who knew?

I lay there for an hour and half - no kidding. Maybe I'm switching to Europe time early.

A little bit long:

I realize that some folks like to see pix. Others like to read. Yet others like to do both: read and look. And still others, neither. I wonder - what are you doing here?

Oh ... yeah, and there are those who like to watch - Reels!

I'm leaving in 4 days. Yeah, no kidding.

I've spent months preparing for events in the past, but when those events approached, I NEVER felt the anticipation, the nervousness, the excitement that I am feeling for this upcoming venture.

In the coming weeks and months I will post pix. You'll recognize those posts when you see, ready? pix!

I also plan to post my musings - things I think I think - that came to me while I was walking. You will see something like the pic included here. I'll try to remember to number them. You know, just in case you're wondering what goes thru a person's mind when they are walking and walking and walking ... and walking and walking. If you don't like to read ... just skip that update.

Wilby will be (haha, I didn't see that coming) with me. I intend to place him in different places and allow you to listen in to conversations he and I have via Reels! Weird, right? Well, that's me.

I really appreciate those of you who hit an emoji from time to time, who leave a comment, or reach out to me via IM. It's encouraging to me, and fun to share.

If you have a question - do ask. If you have a comment, do tell. If you have a reaction, do hit. The button. Not me.

Finally ... for now. If you know of someone who might get a kick out of following along as some old guy you know walks himself into the ground, do hit the share button or invite them to come along - virtually, of course. Shoot! If you happen to be on the road in England, France, Switzerland, Italy or Vatican City, come out and walk along with me for a bit.

Thanks for being here while I am being there.

I have an acquaintance of sorts that I met here on FB in a Via Francigena group. (They have groups for everything!!)

He happens to live a few miles from me and is 4 years or so younger than I. We've never met in person.

He's on the VF now.

He walked for 10 days across England to warm up. Took a couple of days off, then headed for France from Canterbury.

Though he's done several other caminos, after 5-6 days in France he got unbearable pain in one foot and is now laid up in Paris for 5-7 days on anti-inflammatory meds.

I hope I have enough sense to back off IF I need to. I hope I don't have to back off.

I hope my friend is back on his feet and on his way sooner than later but not sooner than he should be.

My 18L daypack. The 2 smaller packs fit easily into my backpack. One small pack has my poncho and waterproof socks. The other small pack contains my shorts and drillies to wear in the evenings after walking all day.

I have just a few other small things:
skateboard, bowling ball, hockey stick. Other than that I'm pretty much good to go ... I think.

Abt 6-7 lbs total.

Wilby is also dieting now to keep the weight down.
