Recently Microsoft announced a new feature coming in September/October of this year called "Recall". This app takes a snapshot of your desktop every 5 minutes and stores it locally for you to review and for Windows Co-Pilot to reference.

This has raised some serious privacy concerns given the sensitive material these snapshots can capture. Login information, private communications, financial information, and PII such as Social Security numbers as examples. Since the app could store several months worth of snapshots, this means that anyone who gains access to your computer, or if you borrowed a computer to use, can see, save, and use that information.

While Microsoft may incorporate safeguards between now and the release date, I strongly recommend anyone who receives this update take steps to disable this feature as soon as possible.

Recently it's come to my attention that there was a ruling regarding Avast! Antivirus selling user's browser data. As a long time user of Avast!, and someone who has recommended their product before, this is very disheartening to hear. However, it's not uncommon in this day and age. Often times company's offering free services will data mine you and sell that information off as a way to cover costs.

"If it's free, that means YOU are the product."

The irony is that Avast! offers paid subscriptions for access to additional tools that were in their own right quite handy. So you'd think they wouldn't need to resort to selling user's data.

Moving forward, I'm looking at BitDefender or Malwarebytes to recommend in the future. You can also read more about the Avast! ruling here:

Remember to only use trusted tools when scanning your computer for viruses. Pop-ups and unfamiliar third party websites that "claim" to scan your system for viruses will I stead out viruses in the system. Don't be fooled!

If you're having trouble maintaining a connection to your WiFi over the holidays, try switching the channel your 2.4GHz wifi uses to either 6 or 11. Most routers are set to 1 by default, so that can mean a lot of interference.

If you can see your WiFi half a block from your house, so can everyone else. Make sure you have a strong password or hide the network from public view.
