RTX 5090 Reviews are Here: or, a Creeping Sense of Disappointment
Greatness; At Any Cost

Do you want all the best that gaming has to offer? Of course you do, who wouldn't!
Oh also, do you have at least two, maybe three thousand dollars? ...Bueller?

The reviews are in for the Broadwell...wait, scratch that...Blackwell heavy hitter and for the most part it's unfortunately predictable. You pay 25% more money, you get 30% more (give-or-take-30%) performance. Obviously 32 gigabytes worth of VRAM is a huge amount, and GGDR7 has great performance, but currently the only things really using that much memory on graphics cards aren't games, they're Large Language Models.

Nvidia's RTX 5090 Unboxing & Performance Leaks | Maybe more like 4090 Ti?

The RTX 5090 launches close to the end of the month on the 30th as the first of the Blackwell series, and while full performance reviews won't be out until closer to release there have been some hardware hands-on. There's been significant praise for the new design's flow-through design, where there's actually fully open sections in the board on both ends with the components largely centered in the middle, to allow air to go through cooling fins completely. While probably a necessary move for the up to 600w the graphics card can draw, it has some implications for how graphics card design and computer case design may interact in the near future.

Intel seems very much to have a success on their hands with their first release of their Battlemage generation of GPUs, as their just-launched B580 quickly sold out from most retailers. The graphics card got excellent reviews from most sources for being an excellent performer at its entry price point, particularly for having higher memory for higher texture quality than its closest competitors and very strong raytracing performance.

Pat Gelsinger has retired from a long career at Intel, from hardware engineer to the CEO since 2021. He's been replaced by interim co-CEOS David Zinsner, Intel's CFO and former head of Micron, and long-serving product chief MJ Holthaus.

Why you can't find anything online

It's arguable that a large number of the issues we as a society face comes down to being because of how much searching Google sucks.

It is increasingly difficult to find anything of real quality online from a search if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, or are willing to put in a lot of extra time to dig through the mountains of similarly-useless results, use more specific terms to refine your search, or similar research. When searching is that futile, suddenly getting news and information through social media is easier, with all the bias that comes from getting things from smaller groups, and AI has caused such a storm just because on a certain level, it's just a search engine that can actually find you what you're looking for.

And it turns out that some of that may be by design.

Ever since Intel launched their first series of dedicated graphics cards with the "Alchemist" generation A770 and A750, it was clear from underperforming hardware and serious driver issues that there was a lot of teething issues. After that generation's launch, Intel started talking about how their second-generation "Battlemage" would be a significant refinement and iron out a lot of the issues they had the first time around, and while they did make huge improvements to the drivers and user experience for their first generation, their aim had been to take on the higher end of Nvidia and AMD's GPUs, and only ended up competing in the middle.
