DNA IT Tip Tuesday | Finish Strong. Plan Ahead.
Over the course of a year, small gaps accumulate. An employee leaves but their login stays active. Someone gets admin access for one project and never loses it. A trial account never gets closed. None of it is a problem on its own. Together, it is exactly the kind of clutter attackers look for.
That is what a year-end security review is for. Once a year, you clean house.
Here is what to check.
Remove logins for every former employee and every old vendor who no longer needs access. This is the single most common gap we find.
Review who has administrator access and pull it back from anyone who does not genuinely need it. Admin rights should be rare and intentional.
Confirm that multi-factor authentication is turned on across every critical account. Accounts have a way of slipping through over a busy year.
Cancel unused software licenses and stale accounts. It closes security gaps and saves money at the same time.
This is not a complicated review. It is a matter of sitting down once a year and actually doing it. Most businesses never do, which is exactly why it matters.
