Address quality is a sequence of decisions, and most organizations are missing at least one.

Is the address valid at the point of entry?

Does it reflect recent changes before the file goes to print?

Is return mail used to update records, or is it just processed and discarded?

Is the feedback loop closed, or does the same bad address reappear in the next campaign?

Adam Collinson’s Understanding Address Quality series walks through the full lifecycle: what address quality actually means, how it degrades, what each intervention can and cannot do, and what a well-governed postal data operation looks like in practice.

If your address quality process is a campaign-by-campaign effort rather than a continuous system, it is worth spending time here: https://hubs.ly/Q04yvcPG0

If an organization can't keep address data accurate, the problem is rarely the addresses.

Address quality is usually the first visible symptom of something larger: incomplete customer profiles, disconnected systems of record, weak governance, validation standards that differ from team to team.

Address data also decays faster than almost any other enterprise data. Customers move. Businesses relocate. Households change. Staying current takes orchestration and governance, not another cleanup project.

Stop cleaning. Start maintaining.

Is Postal Data Part of Your Enterprise Data Strategy?

Enterprises are investing heavily in Snowflake, Databricks, CRM, BI, and AI.

What about postal data?

A returned statement is a data-quality signal. A change of address is a customer-data event. A delivery scan is a customer-journey event.

Postal data shouldn't live on an island.

Modern postal data is enterprise data.

What Happens to Your Postal Data?

Every piece of mail generates data: address quality, USPS scans, delivery events, change-of-address information, returns, and exceptions.

But who gets to use it?

If the answer is just "the mail team," you're leaving value on the table.

Postal modernization changes the question from "Can we see what happened?" to "Can the enterprise use what happened?"

A move update can be valid and still not come through.

Between NCOALink® updates, some change-of-address records need correcting. The USPS Daily Delete file helps keep those records from producing an incorrect match against your list.

The tradeoff: that same safeguard can temporarily block a move update that was valid all along. Until it clears, the record keeps the old address.

Adam Collinson explains what that means for your mail, and how to handle the records it affects: https://hubs.ly/Q04yv8Q30

When production tracking is in one system, USPS visibility in another, address changes somewhere else, and customer service in a whole different system, the same mailstream data is being processed in four places that don't communicate with each other. That's why teams can't pinpoint a bottleneck, can't hold a supplier to an SLA, and can't answer a basic question about where a mailpiece is without opening four systems. One view of the whole mailstream: https://hubs.ly/Q04yv7V10

Do You Actually Know Everything You're Mailing?

Statements. Cards. Notices. Claims letters. Marketing mail. Regulatory communications.

Different business units. Different systems. Different vendors.

Do you know how much you're sending, what it costs, who owns it, and how it performs?

If those answers live in six different places — or don't exist at all — that's where postal modernization starts.

You can't modernize what you can't see.

Address Line 1 is not always the first line of an address.

USPS equipment reads addresses from the bottom up: city, state, and ZIP first, then the primary address line, then secondary details like a unit number, then the name and company on top.

Get that order wrong and the consequences aren't cosmetic. Adam Collinson cites a case where a basement apartment labeled “B” sat below the street address instead of above it. Automated equipment read “B” as a street name in a city where one existed, and the mail looped indefinitely until someone caught it by hand.

Structure isn't a formatting preference. It's what the equipment reads.

PCC Week runs September 28 to October 2.

Most Postal Customer Councils hold their annual meeting that week: award winners announced, and USPS walking through what it plans to communicate in the year ahead.

The Postmaster General attends one in person. This year it's the SunStates PCC in Orlando. Registration is required.

If you've never been to your local PCC, this is the week to go. The USPS locator map and the details are here: https://hubs.ly/Q04yv76h0
