I understand that a social media post is circulating claiming that if a poll worker writes anything on your ballot before giving it to you, your ballot will be disqualified. This is misleading and does not accurately explain Iowa election law.

Under Iowa Code § 49.82, a precinct election official is required to place their initials on each ballot issued to a voter. A ballot is not disqualified simply because an election official has made the legally required endorsement.

If you have a concern about an unexpected mark on your ballot, ask the precinct election officials for clarification before casting it. If you make a mistake on your ballot, Iowa Code provides a process for returning a spoiled ballot and receiving a replacement, up to three ballots total.
