Its Funny, i just had a customer ask me what i reccommend for an inkjet printer. I just wrote about it last week.. The answer is an Epson Ecotank. But, more than this. If you are going to buy a printer that costs over $200-$400, then buy the 3 year warranty for approx $40-$80. Stick on the bottom of the printer.. You will likely have a problem at some point. A little insurance plan for cheap.
I asked ChatGpt to tell me what everyone is charging for their warranty.. Nice Information for you to know.
Here’s the real-world difference in how easy it is to actually use the warranty (this matters more than price when your EcoTank dies).
🥇 1. Best Buy (Geek Squad Protection) — EASIEST / LOW HASSLE
⭐ What happens when it breaks:
You walk into the store (or ship it if needed)
They usually:
Replace it in-store OR
Give you store credit / refund value
👉 For printers, many Geek Squad plans are effectively “replacement plans” rather than repair-heavy coverage
👍 Pros
Fastest resolution (often same day / few days)
No arguing with manufacturer
Simple: “it’s broken → they handle it”
Good in years 2–4 when things fail randomly
👎 Cons
More expensive upfront
Sometimes model is out of stock → you get credit instead
🥈 2. Amazon (Asurion) — CHEAPEST, BUT MORE STEPS
⭐ What happens when it breaks:
You file a claim online
They troubleshoot quickly
Then usually:
Refund you (Amazon gift card or reimbursement) OR
Ask you to ship it in
👍 Pros
Cheapest warranty option
Very easy online claim process
Often no hassle approval if clearly defective
👎 Cons
Usually no instant replacement
You may wait for shipping/approval
Refund replaces repair, not same-day fix
📌 In practice: Amazon = “we’ll pay you back,” not “we fix it locally”
🥉 3. Walmart (Allstate / SquareTrade) — MIDDLE GROUND
⭐ What happens when it breaks:
File claim online
They may:
Repair it (less common for printers)
Or reimburse / replace
👍 Pros
Balanced cost
Fair claim approval reputation
Similar to Amazon but sometimes smoother approvals
👎 Cons
Usually shipping required
Not instant replacement
📊 REAL EXPERIENCE COMPARISON (what users actually feel)
Feature Best Buy Amazon (Asurion) Walmart (Allstate)
Speed ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
Ease ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
In-store swap YES NO NO
Refund style Store credit/replacement Refund/gift card Refund/replacement
Hassle level LOW MEDIUM MEDIUM
🧠 Simple way to think about it
Best Buy = “Bring it in, walk out fixed/replaced”
Amazon = “File claim, get your money back”
Walmart = “Somewhere in between”
💡 What I’d pick for an EcoTank (important)
EcoTanks usually fail from:
printhead clogging
long idle periods
electronics aging (2–4 years)
👉 That means failures are usually not worth repairing
So:
If you want ZERO hassle → Best Buy
If you want lowest cost → Amazon
If you want middle ground → Walmart
🔥 Straight recommendation for YOU
For a $200–$500 EcoTank:
👉 Best Buy wins if you hate waiting or troubleshooting
👉 Amazon wins if you just want cheap “backup money” coverage
