The decision to build any piece of software can be boiled down to two basic ideas:

1. I want to save time

These two motivations are fundamental for starting a project. But there’s a third reason to build software that’s often glossed over that can make the difference between a product that people will like, and one that they will love:

Delight

This means caring so deeply about your end user th

at when they sit down to use it for the first time they smile. They feel how the software doesn’t just solve their baseline needs, but it has actually anticipated what they want, hope, and desire. Producing this kind of joy doesn’t happen by mistake. Where Truly Great Software Comes From:

Truly great software happens when someone who is an expert at what they do identifies an opportunity to define the future of their profession, or at least disrupt or advance their own vocation. It’s when an industry expert can tease apart a situation into its intuitive pieces and recognize the opportunity to solve a specific problem through computation. This hard-won insight needs to be coupled with technical expertise, a trusting and ethical relationship, and great coffee. The final result - creating something that people love - this is what moving into the future looks like.

We’re sharing this news with a heavy heart: On Wednesday evening, we lost an instrumental member of the 1905 New Media team. Bredon Jones passed away after a long, hard-fought battle against advanced appendiceal cancer.

Bredon was the co-founder of Giant Hat, a website and app development company that was acquired by 1905 New Media in 2015. Bredon served in a variety of technical and leadership roles at 1905 New Media, including as the company’s Vice President, before stepping away in August of 2021 to focus on his treatment.

Bredon founded Giant Hat with the goal of fulfilling his personal dream to create “a self-employed utopia of creativity and truth.” His commitment to this vision was unfailing, as Giant Hat became 1905 New Media, and as the company began to rapidly grow and evolve over the course of multiple acquisitions.

Bredon made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His wisdom, even-keeled demeanor, optimism, honesty and drive will forever keep us moving toward his vision. We love you, Bredon. Thank you for your friendship and leadership.
