My whole job is asking the dumb question so you don’t have to.

Last month it was “ what’s the actual difference between having something turned on and having it actually enforced?”

Every manufacturer has one: the computer nobody is allowed to touch.

It runs the machine that cost six figures. It's on Windows 7. The vendor is gone. So it sits unpatched on the same network as your email and your accounting.

We're not going to tell you to upgrade it. Production wins. Instead:
🔹 Put it on its own network segment
🔹 Take away its internet access
🔹 Make a full image — and actually test the restore
🔹 Write down what it does and who understands it

An isolated old machine is a manageable risk. A forgotten one is an open door.

Law firms: do you know which AI tools your staff is using?

Pasting a client contract into a chatbot doesn't set off any alarms. Which is EXACTLY why it keeps happening. And whether it's a confidentiality problem depends on terms almost nobody has read.

Banning AI doesn't work; people just use their phones. Writing down these three rules does:
1. Here are the approved tools. anything else, ask.
2. No client identifying text gets pasted anywhere.
3. AI output gets reviewed, never filed as-is.

Insurance agencies: your cyber renewal questionnaire is a security audit in disguise.

Most people answer it from memory. Three questions worth verifying before you sign:
1. Is MFA actually enforced on every email? Not just enabled.
2. Have you ever restored a backup, or just confirmed one ran?
3. Is that "antivirus" actually EDR? They're not the same.

Answering yes when the truth is "sort of" is how a claim gets denied later.
