You've probably heard of the "Hi Mom, I got a new number" text. It's been around for years. What's new is that scammers can now copy a voice from a short video clip and call sounding like your grandkid.

The fix hasn't changed:
Hang up and call the number you already have saved.

Some families pick a code word only they know.

Share this with the person in your family who'd drop everything to help.

There is a scam going around where someone calls pretending to be a grandchild in trouble.

"Grandma, I got in an accident, please don't tell Mom, I need money for bail."
With today's technology, the voice can even sound like them.

One simple fix: pick a family code word.

If someone calls asking for money in a panic, ask for the word.
No word, hang up and call your family member directly on the number you already have.

Takes two minutes at the dinner table and it could save someone thousands.

Here is the short list I give every office we support:

1. Don't hide it.
Tell your IT person right away.
A fast "I think I clicked something" beats a perfect cover-up every time.

2. Disconnect the computer from Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable.
Leave it powered on.

3. If you typed a password into that page, change it from a different device, starting with email.

4. Watch for odd login prompts or MFA requests you didn't start, and deny them.

5. Let your team know a suspicious email is going around so nobody else clicks it.

None of this needs to be scary.
It just needs to be written down and known before the day it happened ends

Removing admin rights from everyday accounts is a simple fix, and it doesn't have to slow your team down.

One bad download and your saved email and accounting logins are exposed.

Simple fix: a work device for work, or at least a separate user account with no saved work logins, plus MFA on email.

Most small businesses have one person who knows every password and how all the tech fits together.

Great until that person is on vacation, out sick, or gone.

Write it down, put the logins in a password manager, and make sure two people can get in.

You probably haven't logged into your domain registrar since the day someone set it up for you.
Neither has anyone else on your team, and that's the problem.

Your domain runs your website AND your email.

If it lapses, or the only login belongs to someone who left years ago, both go dark with almost no warning.

5 things worth checking this week:
1. Know where your domain is registered and when it renews.
2. Turn on auto-renew with a card that won't expire next month.
3. Make sure the login belongs to the company, not a former employee or an old web designer.
4. Turn on MFA for that login.
5. Point the renewal and contact emails at an address someone actually reads.

Ten minutes now beats a very bad morning later.

You've probably told your team to be quick and helpful when someone calls about a computer problem.

We get it, that's exactly what scammers count on. If someone calls saying they're "from IT" and asks you to read back a code sent to your phone, hang up and call back on a number you already trust.
