For warehouse workers, stifling heat can cause health issues from dehydration to heat stress, and impact day-to-day productivity.

As our climate warms and extreme heat events spread, state legislators are enacting new and necessary worker protection regulations for indoor workers, such as forklift drivers.

The California Occupational Safety and Standards Board is considering new worker protection regulations that would require employers to cool buildings when temperatures reach 82 degrees.

One group of employees who would be exempt from the proposal? Those who work remotely, like Phantom Auto’s remote operators. Phantom’s operators remotely drive forklifts and move materials in very hot or very cold warehouses from the comfort and safety of a temperature-controlled office, up to thousands of miles away.

Even when temperatures may be unsafe inside the four walls of a warehouse, Phantom’s remote operation technology enables highly-skilled material handlers to safely keep the supply chain moving.

Only a few states have rules to protect workers from the growing threat of extreme heat, either indoors or outdoors. California is expected to adopt heat standards for indoor workers in spring, even as federal legislation has stalled.

In the Modern Materials Handling Magazine article below from last week, Kristi Montgomery, VP of Innovation at Kenco Group, discusses how Phantom Auto's remotely operated forklifts make Kenco's forklift fleet operations "more resilient, productive, and easier to staff and manage."

Specifically, Montgomery highlighted the following regarding Phantom’s remotely operated forklifts:

“Rather than using AI to make sense of the physical environment, they leverage the brains and problem-solving abilities of human operators. That lessens the need to have a perfectly consistent physical environment, since the human brain can make sense of factors that might cause an exception or holdup for a fully autonomous unit.”

Thanks to Kristi and Kenco for a great partnership!
