I was only 14 on September 11th 2001 but I will never forget it. I feel like I grew up a great deal that day and in the coming weeks. At an age where little crosses your radar unless it directly affects your immediate future I was filled with a profound sorrow that I didn't understand. My world and empathy began to expand and for the first time I felt great national pride. I truly felt that there was something special about being an American citizen. I was grateful for my country and the men and women that made it a great nation. I was taught these things in my youth but had never felt that personal connection to my citizenship. I have grown up and in today's world it seems that we hear much more about our nations short comings than its virtues. I know that our nation has its problems and that we need to find answers to to these issues. I feel however that this is mostly what we hear. As a nation I believe we complain far too much for a people as blessed as us. I have had the opportunity to travel to other countries and even live in a developing one. While I have learned much from these experiences and have seen great lessons to learn I have still come to the conclusion that our nation has the greatest potential of any i have been to. I obviously have not been to all countries and know that we should learn from others as well. I believe however that this is a divinely inspired nation and that we truly live in a land of great opportunity. 911 was a great tragedy and I am heartbroken at the millions of people affected by that day. I am able to find great encouragement from this however. I live very far from New York. I did have a friend with whom I wasn't terribly close but knew when I was young who lost his life but I didn't know him well enough to strongly mourn his loss. A small percentage of our nations citizens were there that day but somehow it changed us all. I believe it is because we have more in common than we have at odds with each other. We are all human beings, children of something far greater than ourselves. We all are part of a human family that at its roots has a great potential for good and compassion. I have been uplifted by the selfless and kind acts in the last couple weeks with the great storms in Texas and Florida. To me to be an American is to lend a hand to those who need one and to care for those that need to be cared for. This is the feeling we had after 911. We were truly one nation under our Creator and indivisible. I hope that we can all remember 911 and that we can think about what we have done to honor those who lost their lives that day. God bless America.
