As part of any professional installation our team is involved with, we always recommend that clients include us in the planning and installation of their internet service. The photo below is a perfect example of why this matters.
We recently had to visit a client to pick up one of our mobile Starlink dishes. (As a courtesy, we keep mobile Starlink units available for clients to rent while they wait for their ISP to deliver service. In this case, Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) took nearly six months to complete the installation.)
Unfortunately we were not contacted before the installation took place, now the installation itself created another problem. The installers drilled a hole into the exterior wall of a brand-new multi-million-dollar home and then dropped the router/gateway on the homeowner’s bedroom floor. Just inches away from where they drilled was a blue conduit that runs directly to the home’s IT closet — exactly where the router should have been installed.
This isn’t meant as a warning only about MEC. The reality is that this situation can happen with any ISP installation. Most installers are trained to complete the basic service hookup, but they typically aren’t familiar with the layout of your home or business, and they often don’t have the networking or infrastructure knowledge required for properly integrating internet service with a structured network or AV system.
That’s why we strongly recommend contacting your IT/AV provider before any ISP installation takes place. A little coordination ahead of time can prevent costly mistakes and ensure your equipment is installed where it belongs.
In this case, the homeowner now has:
• An unnecessary hole on both the exterior and interior of a brand-new home that will need repaired
• A router installed in the wrong location
• High-end networking equipment that isn’t functioning as intended
A simple coordination step could have avoided all of it.
If you or anyone ever needs assistance with having their ISP installed properly, please reach out to us before a costly mistake happens like the one below.
